WHAT SHOULD THE BUSH ADMINISTRATION DO ABOUT NORTH KOREA?

[+] ballot by margaret123
created Wed Oct 11, 06

I think we can all agree that the current nuclear situation in North Korea is the fault of both the Clinton and Bush Administrations. Appeasement and neglect have characterized the American approach to North Korea for at least 30 years. As a result, the situation has gotten very dangerous. What do you think the Bush Administration should do about North Korea?

Blockade them by air and sea
Ignore them
Nuke them
Give Japan Nukes to balance the region
Give South Korea Nukes
Persuade China to help
Engage in direct bilateral talks
Invade Iran
Write Kim Jong Il a letter saying how angry we are
Work with the UN to reach an agreement
Wait for the next president to deal with it
Let another country/UN deal with it until we are directly attacked or strongly threatened

COMMENTS:
Actually, I do not agree that Clinton was part of the problem nor do I view any "appeasement" as having happened.

I've outlined some germane history in my comment on ballot #103219, for those who have too casually accepted apologist accusations.

What to do?

1. Engage in direct bilateral talks.
2. Offer a contingent non-aggression pact (unloess we really do have plans to invade, what does this cost us?)
3. Fire John Bolton and ban him from any and all UN posts

Voted : Persuade China to help
Looks like the smartest of all given options, to me. China, a power in the region (whether we care to admit it or not) stands the best chance of making headway in the matter, either through persuasion or intimidation.

neglect yes. appeasement no.

if anything, I think we've been egging him on. not counting on the fact that each actions actually makes him stronger in the eyes of his people.

We should focus on the propaganda portion of the campaign. Sure we can level them using thermonukes, but then we would have another Iraq on our hands.

Gotta get that kim jong il to become a non-issue. all aids delivered to N. korea should be direct to the hungry, and not a cent to their military. Also set up safety zones in China and S. Korea for evacuees from North Korea, depopulate the place and starve out the military.

Mr. LCD: How would you characterize a carrot without a stick? Isn't that a good definition of "appeasement"? This seems to have been the policy of the Clinton administration (whom I liked and much preferred to Bush on most issues)?

Voted : Persuade China to help
To be honest, I don't think there is anything anyone can do, except perhaps China.
by wolf_nipple_chips on Wed Oct 11, 06 2:50pm [+]

Cath: you even admitted that secret enrichment went on under clinton, after they'd had their little deal to not produce weapons in exchange for nuclear reactors. How you continue to claim that switching from overt to covert weapons programs is a huge success for clinton I don't know.
by herzog on Wed Oct 11, 06 3:37pm [+]

We ought to allow south korea and japan to develop nuclear capabilities if they choose. Not ideal, but there you have it.

We also should make it clear than any act of aggression using nuclear weapons will be met by the full force of the american nuclear arsenal, and that includes selling these weapons to others who may use them against us.
by herzog on Wed Oct 11, 06 3:39pm [+]

Six years of utter and complete neocon incompetence have simply guaranteed that North Korea will develop full nuclear capabilities.

At this point, any proactive approach by the United States would be risky given the inability of the necons who run the Bush foreign policy to get even the smallest action right.

At least if they sit still, with their thumbs up their ass, they will screw things up the least, and that's about the best we can hope for. Maybe we should get all the Bush neocons IM accounts and they can spend their days sending dirty messages to boys.

What we can do is pray that some intelligent people get into the next Administration, who can mitigate the failures of the idiots in the White House now.

Stretch it out until we're through with this year's mid-term elections so people forget about Iraq.
by Applerod on Wed Oct 11, 06 8:20pm [+]

Not only ignore them..
but make damned sure that ALL Western TV and print media ALSO ignore them.
As long as they can see our TV stations giving them coverage, their crap will continue.
