BLU-RAY VERSUS HD DVD -WHO WILL WIN THIS NEXT GEN DVD BATTLE OF THE TITANS?

In one corner we have Sony with the superior but more expensive Blu-Ray, in the other corner we have Toshiba with it's much less expensive HD DVD.

This is very reminiscent of the Sony Betamax videotape versus JVC's VHS videotape consumer techno format war of the late 70's early 80's, which saw Sony's more compact Betamax format with it's superior picture quality crushed by JVC's inferior VHS, the reason being Sony's hubristic refusal to share it's technology by licensing it out to rival brands, JVC did the opposite and licensed it's VHS out to any rival that wanted it, result was that VHS swamped the market and marginalising Betamax, with Sony ultimately suffering the humiliation of turning up in the colours of their arch rival by dumping it's superior Betamax for VHS in the early 90's.

The consumers were the real losers in that war, we ended up with second best. Sony - yet So far.

Which is why I hope and pray that Sony win this one, Toshiba's HD DVD has already stolen a march on it's arch rival Sony, by getting to market first in the USA, it's being sold out everywhere as eager techno savvy consumers snap them up.

However Sony has the advantage off a guaranteed massive share of the market because it's forthcoming Sony Playstation 3 will have Blu-Ray technology incorporated into the console.

While HD DVD can contain to 15 gigabytes of data, Blu-Ray can hold significantly more with 25 gigabytes, and astonishingly Panasonic recently tweaked this up to a massive 200 gigabytes, so you will effectively be able to carry around a high power hard disc drive disc in your pocket!

I'm really looking forward to seeing how this one develops, and which format does or does not prevail, I just hope that the ultimate winner in the end is you and I and that Blu-Ray ultimately wins out.
