[+] serious ballot by Mithrandir created Wed Oct 18, 06 In third-world countries where disease, famine and poverty are rampant, is it beneficial to sponsor a child by donating a small amount of money monthly and building a relationship with the child through letters and postcards? I have friends who work in international aid, who say the programs that do NOT go through local governments or religious groups are the most effective, as the money and effort goes directly to the people concerned without being eroded by corruption and bribes. Apparently, through such a sponsorship, the child gets free access to schooling, his or her family have health care, and the community at large is supported by local initiatives such as improving living conditions including hygiene and access to clean drinking water, creating alternate sources of food, and some economic development.
