I'm not sure whether it's something that actually makes a faint ringing or just the way ears are. Interesting though.
Sounds like you both have Tinnitus, it's a hearing disorder.

Yep it happens to me. Slap yourself across the ear and it goes louder for a while.

Yes. It's happened all my life, every since I can remember. It's not tinnitus or blood pressure related either, I've been examined for both as well as other possible causes and the doctor still can't figure it out. The odd thing is that it doesn't 'sound' like it's comming from my ear, but the part of the side of the head right above my ear. And it's more of a hum than a ringing. An electronic sounding hum.
Yes, it started when I was a teenager.
