COMMENTS:
Most people in that line truly were hungry. It may be that the food bank is open only during certain hours.

That is sad.

An embarrassing irony in such a 'wealthy country.'

Look I live in NYC so I see the Homeless every time I leave my apartment or get on the subway, but in my city we have some of the best services for the Homeless so when I see a food bank or people entering a shelter I feel alot better.I rather see them on a food line then wandering the streets or beging on the subway.Yes this is a wealthy nation but some simply refuse to support themselves and that's why poverty is still a reality in America.

In the Land of Plenty...oh, my.
The majority of poor people in America have jobs. This is a sad testimony about Republican America.
^cranky you are a perfect example of what is wrong with liberals in America today, rather than place the blame for poverty were it rightfully belongs with the poor themselves you blame the Republican government. Tell me sir when Clinton reduced the funding for welfare did poverty get better or worse in this nation?

So we're feeding people who don't have jobs, and this is a sad condemnation of america? Wouldn't it be a bad sign if we weren't feeding them?
For me it's sad people have to wait in line at charities(Not the Government) to get food to eat, many of the poor do have jobs but aren't making enough to feed their family. I'm sure someone will say they shouldn't have a family if they can't afford to feed them, but things happen through no fault of their own.

Wow. Strange comments. People aren't poor because they refuse to work. The overwhelming majority of poor people do work, are homeless, or are on Social Security or disability. This myth of the welfare person who won't work is just utter bullshit nonsense that has been propagated for years. People now believe it. Try actually spending some time around the poor. Go and work at a food bank for a couple of days. You will quickly see how completely ASININE and IGNORANT your comments are. I usually respect what you - corrupt - say, but on this subject you are nothing but an ignorant, heartless, fool. I remember someones father who was on Social Security disability. He got all of $500 a month. Out of this he had to pay rent and other expenses. Yeah... this is how we treat people. Of course it was this guy's fault. He was hooked up to an oxygen tank. Just a lazy guy who didn't want to work. Or perhaps it was another person I know who worked two and sometimes 3 jobs to help support and feed his family. Sometimes there wasn't enough. Of course it was his own damn fault. Stupid lazy ass. He didn't want to work. It was his fault. He was just one of those lazy bums waiting in the food bank line. It doesn't take much for the average American to run out of money. Lose a job because of "rightsizing". Didn't matter how well you did your job. Of course now after 3 or 4 months the person has trouble feeding his family. Another lazy guy. Then he had to go on welfare... Sponging off the system. Despite the fact that the vast majority are on welfare for less than a year. I'm glad we have food banks. Generally no questions asked ones. No need for further humiliation. Can you begin to imagine what it feels like to have to stand in that line? In a decent, humane and moral society, we would never let people get to this point of essentially having to beg for food or at least rely on others. A sad reflection on the US. At least we have food banks. I'm sure some of you would want to force those lazy bums (most of whom are working) to fend for themselves. Being poor is their own fault. jeeeeezzzzzz.

Those lines seem to be getting longer every year (especially in the last 5½ years). How many people in the U.S. bust their asses every day at work and are still one paycheck away from being in that same line? Think about that when you vote on Tuesday. You are going to vote, aren't you?
Haha, sometimes you Americans amuse me. 'The land of plenty' eh? :o) *Cue THC or Herzog with some irrelevant per capita crap* :o)

and while your voting - think about the the children who have lost limbs - our children, children my daughter's age - who don't have legs anymore - because they were sent to fight a family feud for George Bush - think about where your tax money goes - sending our children to lose their arms and legs and lives - for what? It makes me sick.
Alright I will admit that my comment was a generalization and perhasp insensative but my point is F.F at the end of the day don't adults have to take responsiblity for themselves?I know that many people who are homeless or who live in poverty are disabled and I think that society should care for those who truly can't care for themselves. However majority of the poor are healthly and should be supporting themselves.I'm not saying that we shouldn't have social services like food banks I just think that people shouldn't rely on the government to for too long.If it is as you say that people only stay on welfare for about a year then perhasp poverty in America is not as bad as some make it to be.
