I also think we'd have a better solution to the social security mess if that's all the retirement these people were going to get, rather than a seperately funded retirement fund.

Yes, but send them to public schools in Washington DC. Not the surrounding suburbs either.

So much could be learned...
You would simply discourage people with high earning potential (i.e educated, driven people) from entering politics.
Having said that, perhaps parliament could do with a few less intelligent people, and a few more with heart and passion.
So only those from privileged backgrounds are intelligent, driven people? Politics especially on the conservative wing are populated by those from privileged backgrounds and inherited wealth. So to assume that people from the public school sector are lost causes seems a little presumptious
" Politics especially on the conservative wing are populated by those from privileged backgrounds and inherited wealth. " Agree with the first part, disagree with the 2nd. The kennedys aren't exactly starving, almost all politicians, liberal, conservative or otherwise, are wealthy by american standards.
yeah, but how would it work? No one can force congressmen to send their kids to public schools, and honestly, why would they want to change the status quo?

Steel "So only those from privileged backgrounds are intelligent, driven people?" If you say so (?) I, on the other hand, did not say that. I said people with HIGH EARNING POTENTIAL are normally intelligent and driven. Please READ my comments before replying, thank you.

another outstanding idea. i like it.
i also like your first comment herzog. its all about accountability and making sure they have a vested interest in making things better for all of us.
A good politician should be doing his job through a passion for making the world better for everyone though surely?, not for fiscal gain.
Lil Ape, I reread your comment and I have still come to that conclusion. As an aside, they say that anyone who wishes to pursue a life in politics should be dissuaded from doing so. I would prefer a system where the candidate is someone people know and trust and not the product of what we in the UK call a 'rotten borough'. It seems to me in some places, the incumbent will win hands down as noone stands against the candidate. In some states in the US, they are so entrenched to one party a monkey could run in the parties colours and win. Democracy in action huh.
^My point was that people with high earning potential, who tend to be people with intelligence and drive, may be dissuaded from entering a job which stops them from using their fiscal wealth to give their children all the advantages possible.
In economi terms, you are increasing their opportunity cost of being a politician as opposed to, say, a wall street trader.
