COMMENTS:
I was about to say that no one chooses to get cancer or liver disease, but food, cigarettes and alcohol are all personal choices with consequences. However, it seems unfair when someone does everything right and gets a deadly disease anyway. This is especially true if a truely good person with talent dies of a disease that's not their fault.
Although I agree with you in the main, obesity is linked to addiction. Smokers and alcoholics find it difficult to stop and so it seems with a larger (excuse the pun) section of society. We have nicotine patches and 12 step programmes for those addiction, so perhaps a drug that help the obese is a good thing. Obesity is a strain on the health system in the UK, and any treatment that reduces the burden on it is welcome. And as an aside, hello Mojo, not spoken in an age.

Well, it's a serious condition, for sure. True, overeating and/or lack of exercise probably causes most of it. It may well be an addiction, as Steelhamster poses and his suggestion of a patch or equivalent to combat obesity sounds plausible. I believe that obesity is second only to cigarette smoking in burdening the USA health systems.
Scaring them with the consequences of their actions and ostracizing them doesn't seem to be working, so they're trying a new approach.
I don't think obesity is linked to addiction. It is linked to eating too much. Alcoholism and drug addictions happen because the body becomes physically addicted to the substance. If the person stops using, they go through withdrawal. An obese person who eats less doesn't go through withdrawal, only their stomach growling a bit because it didn't get 20 1/4 pounders from McDonalds that day.
^ I agree,' Fiddle' but I do believe their are cases where some abnormality may cause the obesity, I don't think it's common. I decided I wanted to see my grandchildren grow up so put myself onj a diet and exercise program without any Dr. or medicine being involved. I lost just shy of 100 pounds in one year. By the way, because of my actions, I am no longer on blood pressure or colestoral (spelled wrong probably) medication.
^ I totally agree, FF. I think there are cases where obesity is caused by some physical ailment but don't think that is common. I decided I wanted to live to see my grandchildren grow up so put myself on a diet/exercise program just over a year ago, without the involvement of a Dr. or any type of weight loss medication. I have lost 92 pounds, and am no longer on blood pressure or colestoral medicine.
^ Oops. Sorry about the double posting. Thought the first one didn't register.
But hey, let's take a pill for everything.

Because of the new system, you have to tick a box to have your vote shown.... which I keep forgetting to tick.
