It seems tha t America has a "cultur of stupidity" among the young. Witness phenomena like The simple life, Jessica Simpson, even here, user DaniDumGirl. Also Drunk-punk fucktards, etc. It seems ignorance is to be applauded nowadays. Why? Got me...

Wow! What a question! This question is hysterical for so many reasons.
===================

But to answer what I believe you're asking: I think that most entertainment in the U.S. tends to cater to the lowest form of American life. We are assulted with it to the extent that we become desensitized. We deem it acceptable and feed it to our kids guaranteeing that the next generation will require more base, vulgar language and action to keep their attention. We continue to dumb down our entertainment, thus dumbing down our society IMHO.
by Exotique on Sun Nov 05, 06 7:37pm [+]

No more so than any other country.
by mindy on Sun Nov 05, 06 7:46pm [+]

Exotique has a point in that the entertainment industry appeals to the lowest common denominator. That's probably why I have such a hard time finding something decent to watch on tv.

This new age culture that we see is very stupid and trust me when I say this, it is the reason why so many young westerners (not just Americans) are uneducated and ignorant. What aspects culture am I talking about? Lets take a look at 2.

-The idolism that young westerners give to celebrities. I mean, you have teens out there who follow celebrities around step by step and there are always magazines and tabloids who supply the demand.

-The desire to have as many vanities as possible (even if you can't afford it). I'll tell you, there are way too many people out there who as soon as they get the power of bank credit, go out and by the nicest car that 20,000 euros can buy. Let's not just look at the economical aspect of this. Lets look at the social aspect. Right now in the young society it's almost required that you dress in the most expensive clothes, drive the best car and follow the herd. This doesn't create a creative environment.

I believe that the "material culture" that we westerners follow is making everyone blind. So it's not just an American thing, it's a western thing. What happens to the minority who don't abide by this culture? They're usually the outcasts of society who get frowned down upon by the majority. It's always been like this and I'll tell you, today it's not looking good.

When insulting the intelligence of others it's best to use proper grammar.

This question is being asked relative to other nations?

If so, then the United States is quite an intelligent nation. I am basing this on the fact that education is provided for quite widely throughout the country. Americans have skills and intellectual capablility because of the good education standards in that country. A lot of this has to do with the country's economic success that it is able to provide such infrastructure to its society, as well a strong and stable civil sector. Most Americans are very literate, have basic knowledge in mathematics, has access to and can utilise the internet, etc.

This is not to be taken for granted. This may be called 'basic' standard, however, on the international level of analysis, such a provision of education is not 'basic standard' at all. Many children cannot attend school in Africa, Latin America, India and other places. I believe that these places have potential, but as it is, the circumstances of socio-economics creates difficulties in education standards.

Reflecting on this comparison, it does seem that the United States has quite a good level of education standard, well above other countries of the of the developing world.

Now, as for a more specific comparison with other developed naitons? That is Canada, the EU25, Russia, Japan and South Korea? That is difficult to say. I don't have any statistics that indicate that Americans are more or less intelligent than the other nations of the Global North. One obvious comparison is skill in foreign languages. Not many Americans can speak another language fluently. However, neither can many French, Japanese and so on. The Dutch stand out as a people educated in various languages, and they perhaps are more intelligent than Americans, French and Japanese in this specific regard, but there is no indication that they are significantly better in the other educational areas, such as math and science. Next, there is the generalisation that Europeans know more about politics and current affairs than Americans. This isn't completely true at all. The argument is made that Americans are blinded with the ignorance that stems from patriotism. Such a juxtaposition cannot be made, because the European countries ahve their own nationalisms. Ask Spaniards about the treatment of Basque terrorist suspects- they might not know. Ask the French about the behaviour of their troops that are in place in many African nations, they may not know. So when it comes to European denouncing Americans of ignorance that stems from nationalism- my advice to such Europeans (and Japanese as well) would be to not throw stones in glass houses...

In any case, I would say Americans are pretty evenly matched in terms of education standards to those of the rest of the developed world. In comparison to the developing world, the US and the rest of the developed world is much more advanced in terms of providing better education standards to its society.

I definitely wouldn't call the majority stupid or ignorant. But I would say that current trends have played roles in lessening common sense. And it's not just America that it's happening in.

by thc2883 on Mon Nov 06, 06 7:57am [+]

The majority? No.

For an exact number, please refer to Cheney's lowest poll numbers. I think it was at 19% at one point. I suggest it is safe to say that this group is divorced enough from reality as to be considered functionally retarded.

And many Canadian kids are in love with that "culture of stupidity", in fact, I bet our generation knows more about THEIR history, their culture than ours. What is our culture, anyway? Do we even have a culture?
by aya on Mon Nov 06, 06 8:47am [+]

I never said we were immune to it, jsut that it happens in America(NORTH America!) As for our culture, it is this; bi-ligual, Paki-welcoming, peace-keeping, maplesugar, good beer, glorious in battle, hearty lumberjacks in the K of C hall playing bingo, and Bombardier snowmobiles. Now you know. Welcome to Canada. Shut up.

^isn't it interesting that the very same people who accuse Americans of being imbued with "the culture of stupidity" exude stupidity themselves?

First off, our so-called 'mosaic' is really filled with people stuck in their own enclaves; glorious in battle? Aren't we known as peacekeepers with little or no army?

As for the rest, that doesn't define that much of a culture. Most of our culture is from the States.

"I would say Americans are pretty evenly matched in terms of education standards to those of the rest of the developed world."

That's not true. The American public education system is a joke. Especially in the urban areas. The schools severly lack funds, the teachers aren't qualified and crime rates inside of public schools are soaring. Read about it before commenting on it, PLEASE.

I noticed the gramma police out in force...maybe I'm in in the more (double) negative category, but I stand by how I wished to express my question...(where are they now ?)...I would have used "are" if I used "and," not "or"...(I know "people" is plural)
