I've heard all of the first five stories.
A fart contest?
I dont know - but you may not know that during the first gulf war - most of the major Radio stations, including the BBC, banned this song from play. Thats a fact They thought it would remind people of the bombings that were going on. Considered it insensitive to play
Voted : no meaning, just lyrics that Collins put together for effect
Has reportedly? I've heard most of the above from various sources, usually in print, but the only one that I've actually witnessed coming from Phil Collins himself is the first one. No meaning just lyrics.

Voted : Collins witnessing his friend drowning from far away, someone closer could've rescued him but didn't
I heard it was something to do with a friend of his drowning years ago, so that's my choice.
It's his favourite song of all his own compositions I read somewhere too.

Who even bothers listening to the lyrics anymore? I only put it in the D player for the drum solo at the end. A friend of mine who's a pilot has a loop of just that, twenty minutes long if memory serves.
20 minutes! I'll have to give it a listen -
^ sorry - missread your comment - Are the drums good enough to listen to for 20 mins?? Or was this mate of yours a bit of a psycho
Phil Collins mostly sucks but the lyrics of this are kinda cool.
Voted : He had a bad case of gas

Mr_Susan, yes and no. He is, IMO, one of the sanest people I've ever counted it an honor to call friend. But he's also a pilot, and that carries insanity as a requirement...
Voted : his troubled marriage with his first wife
He already said it was about his first wife. Just listen to the lyrics and it tells youl.
