The world will be headed toward a major confronation between the West and the Muslim world. Nukes probably included.
I can tell you are an optimist. NOT.
^I'm not optimistic about either war's outcome. Who in their right mind is optimistic?
How it will play out long term is the question. I think those areas will become breeding grounds for Islamist extremists without impediment.
GWB screwed the world. Maybe that sounds over the top but that's the way I see it. I welcome anyone to put a positive spin on it.
Despite the fears the GOP has tried to sell us, I am not expecting these areas to become 'major terrorist havens.' Sure, there will be some elements there (Thanks, W). And yes, violence will continue.
However, without foreign forces to fuel the fireand provide targets/ cover, it will devolve into localized infighting among factions, until some local strongman can consolidate enough power to establish oppression again.
