THE UN, WHAT IS IT GOOD FOR?

[+] serious ballot by xxxxxxxx
ACTIVE Tue Nov 14, 06 - Wed Nov 14, 07

There have been so many ballots that outline the flaws of the UN, (and indeed the UN is flawed and deserves to be criticised as such), so this is a ballot asking what you think are the good things about the UN.

The UN, what is it good for?

Absolutely Nothing
World Food Program (WFP)
United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)
United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF)
World Health Organization (WHO)
Just a general meeting place for countries
Demographic information, as well as military intell
Jet-setting Diplomats
SORRY, THIS POLL
IS NOW CLOSED.

COMMENTS:
I would say WHO and UNICEF (I'm not aware of any scandals- anyone know of any on these?)

I do have one criticism of the WHO. During the SARS scare and the Bird Flu spread in East Asia- the WHO had problems with dealing with Taiwan- due to its ambiguous political status in the UN. But, that's not too bad considering the flaws of the other parts of the UN.

WHO, UNICEF and a place for the leaders of dictatorships to demonstrate just what a bunch of pompous blow-hards they and their cronies are.

"UN" is a very prefix meaning not, or the opposite of. A prefix is a group of letters such as pre- or sub- or UN-. Usually, the prefix changes the meaning of the word.
For example, "Many UNiformed people msiunderestimate UNfortunate."

Very little.

I'd agree with socrates on the WHO and UNICEF perhaps, but those could all function as their own stand alone organizations.

Other than that the UN serves to waste money, legitimize despots and defend human rights abuses.

Rather than simply being worthless the UN is actually making things considerably worse.

aya- "Well, there has to be SOME type of forum that allows for conversation between nations."

- There is. It's called the World Trade Organisation. It is separate from the UN. Its meetings actually lead to actual decisions being made and implemented.
