SHOULD COMMON SENSE BE A STRONG TRAIT FOR A MAINTAINER TO HAVE?

[+] serious ballot by jappy
ACTIVE Sat Nov 18, 06 - Thu Aug 13, 09

Last week I get a bunch of negative hits from one of my fellow Maintainers on this site. This person seems to be going through old ballots and rating down choices, many of the choices being perfectly fine, for no other purpose than this person does not agree with the choices. The ballot in question is mine, and on the ballot I allowed all the guest choices in order to respect guest users who might visit MY ballot.

Then I get another questionable one yesterday, same person, for a recent choice I make.

I've tried to explain to this person about common sense, about how selective enforcement works, but it doesn't seem to be sinking in.

This can basically be described perfectly by this analogy:

A good police officer doesn't ticket everyone who jaywalks, a good police officer doesn't normally pull people over for speeding for going 2 mph over the posted limit. A good police officer knows that enforcing rules to the EXACT letter ends up making a person into a power abusing idiot, and in time gives that person the reputation of being a BAD police officer.

So, would you agree with this, being common sense, that should be used by maintainers?

YES, common sense is a must and should be used
NO, maintainers don't need to use common sense.

COMMENTS:
Ooooookay, I picked private ballot, nice of this one to show up in the open?

*L* some maintainers are set up with powers to screw everyone else over by removing ballots altogether, and it seems I don't even have the ability to switch mine to private like we used to be able to haha. Oh well...

Rating down someone for every little spelling mistake and duplicate entry is anal to the extreme.
by nuckinfutz on Sat Nov 18, 06 2:27pm [+]

It's often just using excuses to rate someone down in a personal attack anyway.

There was by now a very old cartoon robot law enforcer who would shoot anyone who violated any law (walking on the grass, whatever). People shouldn't do things that way here.

I would hope so. But these are dangerous and uncertain times, and caution (too much of) seems to be overruling.

it is my mistake that I made some people maintainers based on $$ contributed. My thinking process at the time was that if they care about the site enough to donate $$ then they would want the site without abusers and idiots.

faulty logic on my part.
I will not make that mistake again.

yeah it should. but if i can weigh in here, it's just b&w karma. its nothing. what you describe is totally wrong, but at the end of the day, all anyone has to do is to message lcd and if it was purely unjust, he can fix it -- sorry to add to your work load lcd IC_tune

i've taken a few hits and at first it bothered me, but all-in-all, almost everyone gets along and things seem fine. i just think everyone needs to remember that its all just cyber karma and if anyone knocks you down unjustly, all other users should help out it rating you back up.

so spill the beans -- who's the culprit?

I can't find the link to fix this ballot LCD :(

Yep.

There are alot of maintainers who don't deserve the privledge.

For instance, anyone who gave out several hundred negative 5s in a row for nothing is probably not at the maturity level necessary to really maintain anything.

Maintainers need to be discerning and use their responsiblty erm responsibly.

I am loathe to 'punish' miscreants, as it seems to be an abuse of what ever small power I have been given.

Given all that, if people want me to be tougher, then I am sure it can be done.

I heartily agree with the privelege being revoked if it is being abused.

I want to be a Maintainer, and rate karma down 'til half past two. I want to be a Maintainer & send them all a big "Screw you!" I want to be a Maintainer with a ban button and a smile. I want to start up vendettas that will appall them, read curses about me in Kenny Dublin's latest conspiracy hokum! I want to be a Maintainer, and show everyone what's what!

Tom:

Can't really call myself a "shpw tunes man"...not that there's anything *wrong* with that. However, I am a huge fan of "The Producers" in all its various versions. I think the whole idea behind the thing just cracks me up.
