Israeli calls for killing of Hamas leaders

November 19, 2006

JERUSALEM — Israel's deputy prime minister said Saturday that Israel should assassinate Hamas' leadership, ignore the moderate Palestinian Authority president and walk away from international peace efforts.

Avigdor Lieberman's comments came as the rival Palestinian factions, Hamas and Fatah, continued talks on forming a unity government. President Mahmoud Abbas of Fatah hopes a coalition deal would enable him to revive peace efforts with Israel.

Speaking to Israel Radio, Lieberman said he believed the Palestinians were not interested in setting up their own state, but rather in destroying Israel.(LA Times)

I think cranky is trying to imply that this guy is somehow reflective of what most Israelis think. It isn't. It is like saying the demon love child of Ann Coulter and Bill O'Reilly is reflective of Americans. This guy is on the fringe, but he is correct that Hamas wants the destruction of Israel. That is in the bylaws/constitution. However, the same was true with Fatah. Maybe some day Hamas will mature a bit.

And being the deputy prime minister makes him about as much on the fringe as Vice President, Dick Cheney, is on the fringe here in the U.S.
