DOES IT SEEM LIKE THE TWO MAJOR PARTIES IN THE US ARE SWITCHING PLACES?

Warning: major generalizing here. But I was thinking about this the other day and I think they have.

In the 80s and 90s, the people that voted for Republicans were stereotypically wealthy, from the north, some were celebrities, all very blue blood.

At that time, Democrats were more working class people, largely from the south, strong Christian values, very 'average' people.

But now, the Republicans are largely backed by people in the south. Quite a few that are working class or low-income people, religious people, people who work hard and hunt, fish, etc (what some people would call rednecks).

And the Democrats are now comprised more of wealthy people, celebrities, people from the north and urban settings.

Do you think it's changed? And what do you think made it happen?

Yes. I think it's switched, and I will say why in comments
Yes. I think it's switched, but I don't know why
No. I don't think it's switched and I'll say why in comments

It's happened over a period of decades. Democrats were the conservatives in the 19th century. The New Deal weakened the old party alignments, but FDR practiced coalition politics that included minorities and the solid south. African-Americans voted mostly for JFK, a Democrat, because of his support for civil rights. In decades after that, Southerners increasingly joined the Republicans.

Actually, the generalizations point the other way, typically those with money vote for Republicans, and those who are poor vote for Democrats. But I think more and more it's becoming a wash, except of course for blacks, who are still living with the same failed impression that voting Democratic somehow helps them.
