CAN AMERICAN MILITARY POWER TRANSFORM REGIMES IN THE MIDDLE EAST?

[+] serious ballot by Mithrandir
created Wed Nov 22, 06

In retrospect, a lot of military insiders are saying that if the US had put more boots on the ground at the beginning of the Iraqi conflict, and had not disbanded the Iraqi army, they would have been able to control the insurgency before it expanded out of control. Likewise in Afghanistan, after 5 years the Taliban is regaining strength and influence over most of the country, and NATO troops are left struggling to maintain a semblance of control in the area. So the question remains, does the US have sufficient military power to fundamentally transform the regimes in the Middle East. And if it does, why has it done such a poor job in Iraq and Afghanistan?

The US does have the military power, but it is corrupt and incompetent
The US does have the military power, and it will prevail when its long term goals are met.
The US does not have the military power, but it doesn't want anybody to know
The US does not have the military power, but it doesn't know that itself

COMMENTS:
They have an amazing military power, but it's not enough on its own. (another example: just yesterday Syria whacked Pierre Gemayel. After all those threats Bashar al-Assad continues with his political assassination policy).

i don't think it's a question of having the capability, it's a case of having the will and the resolve. the american people do not like seeing or hearing about dead soliders or dead civilians. thanks to vietnam, we have very little tolerance for protracted wars with countries that did not pose an immediate or physical threat to the united states.

the people always get restless and then the politicians panic and we all know what happens then.

it would have been nice to be able to add a choice to this ballot by the way. the ones given are not sufficient.

Actually, I don't think military power has much to do with it. Even if we do set up a government (to our liking) it is pretty likely that regime will fall as soon as our military leaves. These nations have been fighting forever and I don't think we will change that. One final thought: Fourteen years in Vietnam, 58,000 lives lost...government fell in about 2 years. I know Vietnam is not included in this ballot but we can't ignore the similarity and outcome.

Yes, it can transform them from functioning governments into chaos.

It has clearly deposed of Saddam Hussien's regime, the question that now has to be asked is 'was it worth deposing him?' In hindsight the cost, economically and Politically, has surely been astronomical.

Corrupt, incompetent and - judging by the pavlovian tendency to leap to the defence of all things American by an unfortunately large percentage of its inhabitants - deluded.

How do you win a struggle against a buncha religious brainwashed
ever so willing to kill themselves??
You simply can't.
They won the war before you even fired the first shot, coz they're perfectly willing to die, and you're scared as shit to die
(even though God convinced you, that you want-to-need-to go to Heaven
you don't wanna die to get thar)
