COMMENTS:
I think it's more how he said it than what he said. He is not the first non-black to utter the word "nigger" in comedy act. However what he said was not a part of his act, and it had nothing humorous about it. He did so to solely insult those kids in his audience, and that's why he is never going to work in hollywood again.
Not much of a deal would be made it any
Jesse Jacksons now saying that he wants to have the "N" word banned in public. Fine but then Black people can't call each other the N word either'

I think you hit the nail on the head there, Robin. I can hear Richard Pryor's "Sunset Strip" in my head as I type, all the times he used "honkie". I'm *told*it's considered racist, but I don't see it, personally.
You are comparing apples and oranges RG. Mr. Racist, I mean, Mr. Richards used the "N" word not once, not twice, however several times, he then went on to say that there was a time the person he was speaking to, would have been hang upside down with a fork in his arse...(something like that, I don't quite remember exactly)...People get alittle offended when you tell them that there was a time the most barbaric acts of violence would have been perpetrated against them because of the color of their skin...Why say such a thing? He was out of control, he said what he meant, and meant what he said...You don't go on such a rant of insults and claim that you are not a racist, thats illogical to say the less. As far as black comedians uttering the word, I disagree when it is used in their stand up routines as well, but less face it, it is not used in the same spirit as it was with Mr. Racist (although, it should NEVER be used by anyone). If there are people who are offended by what a black comedian says about white people, then, step up to the plate and have your say. However, given the history/present events in America as it relates to race many people on both sides will never see eye to eye on the subject matter. Until the matter of race is discussed honestly and completely in America, the lie continues to live, "with liberty and justice for all."(and that goes for people of color, women, gays, lesbians, those with disabilities, the poor and disenfranchised and the uneducated). Excellent ballot and certainly thought provoking...

PC would apply.
BBC- I said before that what he did was wrong. But I think the double standard here is pretty apparent. A white person makes such remarks and everyone assumes he is racist, while a black man making the same remarks about whites can avoid such assumptions. If we are capable of hearing a black person make disparaging remarks about whites without calling him a racist. Then it can't be that hard to grant a white person the same perspective. The only other option is to seek to destroy the career of everyone that makes such a spectacle of themselves and that would just be loony. But somehow a common ground must be reached.
I assume you read my commentary regarding the matter...He was out of control, he is a racist, I will not make excuses for such a vile person, the notion he merely made a mistake is just incredible, and whether we agree on this matter or not, (and thats ok)whether you are Black or White, the word should never be uttered...This blaming the victim has gotten quite tiresome...Your commentary regarding this matter is noted, excellent debate.
Didn't Farakhan get in trouble for that kind of thing?
I think there's a double standard but I also think that he went overboard. It seemed like he was unravelling before the audience.
"He was out of control, he is a racist, I will not make excuses for such a vile person" People do lash out in frustration and when they do they sometimes wildly overcompensate.Of course it isn't right but you say that as if such an isolated offense automatically negates who he is as a person. This extreme emphasis of and influence of the word racist recalls Mccarthyism in some ways.
"This extreme emphasis of and influence of the word racist recalls Mccarthyism in some ways." - You have decided to see this incident as an isolated incident as it is your right to do so... To imply my objection is in line with McCarthyism demonstrates that you have decided to identify Mr. Racist as the victim and not the individual he was insulting... His behavior was not an isolated incident and as far as his slip of using the "N" 6-7 times negating who is he as a person...Well, we all saw who he is as a person...I bet he wishes that we all did not...I don't believe that one can say the disgusting things he said and not be viewed as a person with racial issues. Again, that is how I view the matter, as do others and it is your right to disagree...
i really don't see the problem.
"Michael Richards will never be on another TV show and he will never star in another movie, so you could pretty much say that these remarks will have absolutely no effect on his career." You couldn't be more wrong Robin. First, this was actually a great career move. Think about it, when was the last time Michael Richards has received this much attention? He now has a second career--apologizing for his dumbass remarks. Second (AND MOST IMPORTANTLY), he has proven he has what it takes to be a REPUBLICAN GOVENOR of some f'd up state. Those black comedians you cited never singled out members from an audience and in clear hate and anger shouted racial obcenities directly at them. Great comments CAKES
" To imply my objection is in line with McCarthyism demonstrates that you have decided to identify Mr. Racist as the victim and not the individual he was insulting..." My point was that the word racist is all too often used as a weapon to put people in line for thought crimes.I've personally witnessed somebody loose their job because somebody, falsely, made that charge of them.As for your stating that I identifies M Richards as a victim I already stated that "he went overboard".IMO,his was a very insensitive rant but since the issue of race was part of it you seem to want the guy's blood. If some non white pulls an isolated rant about whites or asians(the wife's,kids are asian)I take it for what it's worth, pocket lint.I may say my piece but then it's behind me,time to move on.
that's how you deal with hecklers. check out what george carlin says to hecklers: carlin vs heckler .ytmnd .com/ somehow that seems worse. but any mention of race and people go crazy listen to this one: bill hicks rant .ytmnd .com/ suddenly this doesn't seem so bad: video .google .com/ videoplay? docid= -8044 78987 15990 60390
at least he said nigger, and not macaca
Why isn't Joan Rivers calling for his head like she did for Mel Gibson?
The difference is that Chris Rock never singled out an individual white person and made slurs directed at them.
Here's the thing - blacks do call each other "nigga", but as a white person, I do sometimes call another white person "honky" or "cracker".

But he's NOT black.
