ROCKETS HIT ISRAEL AFTER GAZA CEASE-FIRE DEADLINE

JERUSALEM (CNN) -- Palestinian militants in Gaza fired two rockets into Israel Sunday, according to Israeli Army Radio, hours after a total cease-fire in Gaza was agreed upon by the Israeli government and Palestinian factions.

The two blasts caused no damage or casualties in an open area near the Israeli town of Sderot, the radio report said.

Israel Defense Forces could not be immediately reached for comment.

The cease-fire began at 6 a.m. local time Sunday (11 p.m. Saturday ET), authorities said.

Just before the cease-fire took effect, militants fired three rockets into Israel, according to Israel Defense Forces. No one was injured, but a building was damaged.

All Palestinian factions agreed to stop firing rockets into Israel under a cease-fire agreement, according to Nabil Abu Rdaina, a spokesman for Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas.

Meanwhile, the Israeli government has agreed to withdraw troops from Gaza and cease military operations, said Miri Eisin, government spokeswoman.

"We think that there's the possibility of hope here," she said. "What we hope is that the violence itself will stop, and we'll be able to see a little bit of peace and quiet in and around the Gaza Strip." (Watch Eisin discuss cease-fire Video)

The agreement covers only Gaza, she said, and not the West Bank.

Abbas called Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert to offer the cease-fire.

In the United States, a White House spokesman called the cease-fire a "a positive step forward."

"We welcome the announcement," said spokesman Alex Conant. "We hope it leads to less violence for the Israeli and Palestinian people."

Rdaina said, "We hope that this will be a good start to stop all the activities and to withdraw from Gaza as well from the Israeli troops."

The firing of rockets into Israel has recently prompted Israeli airstrikes in Gaza. Three such airstrikes occurred Saturday and early Sunday.

In one of the recent strikes, two people were killed -- one a member of the Palestinian National Guard and the second a militant from the Izzedine al-Qassam Brigade, the military wing of Hamas, according to Palestinian security sources.

In another strike, a Palestinian militant was killed and three others wounded, one critically, when a minibus was targeted east of Gaza City, Palestinian sources said.

Hamas confirmed those in the bus were part of the Izzedine al-Qassam Brigade.

A third airstrike targeted a car near al-Azhar University in Gaza City, security sources said.

The Israel Defense Forces said it conducted an aerial attack on a Hamas terror cell in the Sajaiya neighborhood. It didn't provide casualty figures. The IDF said the cell was part of the group's weapons production division.

They fired some rockets immediately before the cease-fire, but since that wasn't blatant enough they decided to ignore the cease-fire and shoot off a few more.

Fortunately their incompetence prevented any loss of lives, but that hardly exonnerates them.

Does it seem like these factions honestly desire peace, or does it seem they'd rather keep the fight going?

They honestly desire peace, they're just confused as to how to get there
They want to continue fighting
They often do not act as one army and therfore different groups will have different ideas
I don't see how one side can blame the other, both are guilty...

COMMENTS:
Voted : They want to continue fighting
Seems to me they want to keep fighting.

I suppose it could be a few lone fanatics, if it were only this one time.

But this same scenario is played out every single time.

And we can expect unanimous condemnation from the UN in 5 . .4 . . 3. . . oh, right.
by herzog on Sun Nov 26, 06 3:31pm [+]

Not sure - There is no way to answer the question without assuming that they are all acting as one collective. That appears not to be the case.

A FEW lone fanatics?

it just came out on the news that 40% of Israeli settlements are on palestinian owned land. You think you might be pissed if someone kicks you out of your house and your land and opens a cafe. eh.
by Krunkington on Sun Nov 26, 06 3:55pm [+]

I'm with Krunkington, after a while there comes a time people get fed up with what Israel has been pulling from day one. I think that the U.S. and the others should pull out of the two combatants' fight and allow them the space and time to continue to fight it out. The very idea Israel continues to fool the world about their part in this fight is amazing to me. Both parties are at fault, one is no more innocent than the other (will, except for the fact that Israel is occupying land that does not belongs to them). Both sides are killing children, innocent children and for that alone, both sides will answer for that.

your ballot title says:
"ROCKETS HIT ISRAEL AFTER GAZA CEASE-FIRE DEADLINE "

and then in the body of the ballot,
" Just before the cease-fire took effect, militants fired three rockets into Israel, according to Israel Defense Forces. No one was injured, but a building was damaged. "

on top of that,

"The Israel Defense Forces said it conducted an aerial attack "

I bet that was AFTER the cease fire took place.

geez, do you work for Israeli Information ministry or something?
by LCD on Sun Nov 26, 06 4:43pm [+]

13,000 Palestinian security officials are trying to enforce the cease-fire. It was Islamic Jihad that fired rockets after the cease-fire.
by skylab on Sun Nov 26, 06 6:28pm [+]

No, it wasn't LCD. Why do you and some other users accuse users of working for Israel just because they defend it in ballots? That is an ad hominem and red herring attack.
by FiddleFaddleOnLSD on Sun Nov 26, 06 8:10pm [+]

Fiddle- LCD's comments make complete sense and his sarcastic comments regarding your employtment should be easy to spot.

" I bet that was AFTER the cease fire took place."

No, it wasn't. If it were they would have said so. Unless you believe CNN is a far-rightwing pro-Israeli newssource? In which case I would like to talk to you about a business oppurtunity involving a bridge in new york.

" geez, do you work for Israeli Information ministry or something?"

No, the reason I come off as pro-Israeli is that I routinely report the facts without editing. The only way to make the palestinians look like the good guys and the Israelis look evil is to creatively present the news, omit certain facts, and lie/photoshop when that doesn't work. Which, fortunately for the PLO, our media does on a routine basis.
by herzog on Mon Nov 27, 06 5:52am [+]

LCD: they create a ceasefire, then the Israelis for no reason start shooting artillery shells in to palestine, hitting only civilian areas with no military value.

Do you A) attack the user who presented this fact or B) condemn Israel for their actions?
by herzog on Mon Nov 27, 06 5:53am [+]

I condemn revenge killing.
I condemn escalation killings.

all I have to ask you is this. Is there anything that the Israeli government(not the people) is doing that YOU would condemn?

I would like the answer from herzog and fflsd.

"I condemn revenge killing.
I condemn escalation killings."

You didn't condemn this one. Ok, they screwed up and missed killing any jews, but the intent was there. Do you think what they did was wrong? And if so, could you state this publicly?

" all I have to ask you is this. Is there anything that the Israeli government(not the people) is doing that YOU would condemn?"

Sure, plenty. I thought they were foolish to pull out of lebanon before the job was done. They will and currently are paying for that mistake.

I think they've shown a ridiculous amount of patience with hamas and other terrorists groups. Far more than I ever would have.
by herzog on Mon Nov 27, 06 5:02pm [+]

lol.

so if some of my neighborhood kids take potshots at my house from his house 2 miles away, I have perfect right to strap on my uzi and go over to his house, kill his family and their dogs, and set their house on fire?

"pull out of lebanon before the job was done"

and what was the job, a nice ethnic clensing? You sound like Bush.

"patience ... Far more than I ever would have. "

well, at least we established your mindset. good to know.
by LCD on Mon Nov 27, 06 10:09pm [+]

It seems that they want to continue the conflict. They haven't even recognised Israel's right to exist, so it doesn't seem taht they even support the two-state solution. I doubt peace is their primary goal.
by xxxxxxxx on Tue Nov 28, 06 4:26am [+]

^ I think Israel's goal was to get their captured soldiers back and to prevent Hezbollah from being such a threat to their national security. Taking this into account- which side do you think won? I think Hezbollah won that conflict mostly.
by xxxxxxxx on Tue Nov 28, 06 4:28am [+]

" so if some of my neighborhood kids take potshots at my house from his house 2 miles away, I have perfect right to strap on my uzi and go over to his house, kill his family and their dogs, and set their house on fire"

Better analogy. Your neighbors decalare war on you, routinely fire indiscriminately through your windows whenever they see someone, usually miss because they are incompetent, and every once in a while wound of kill someone in your family.

Do you A) sit there and take it or B) go over there and stop them in some way? In this scenario the police aren't an option.

And I notice you still didn't condemn this terrorist act. I guess firing randomly into civilian areas is ok if it's only jews likely to be hurt? Just pretend it was the other way around, and some palestinians barely avoided death at the hands of evil Israelis. I'm sure that scenario would make your blood boil.

" and what was the job, a nice ethnic clensing? You sound like Bush."

Ethnic cleansing? Are you brainwashed? Listening to too much al-jazeera I see.

The job was to first get their soldiers back (I wouldn't want to be captured by hezbollah, would you?) and then to destroy or dismantle their terrorist organization to prevent future wars.

It's amazing how people of your nature can see every evil done by the jews (even ones that exist only in your heads) but turn a blind eye to the very real atrocities committed by the arabs.

I have to ask, is there anything that the palestinians have done that you would condemn?
