Voted : No, that would be ridiculous
I'd have to say no. You can't inherit guilt. Those actually responsible are to blame, their descendents did nothing wrong. Your ancestor could be the most evil tyrannt in all of history, doesn't mean you should be punished for his crimes. But then, I'm consistent on this issue. Let's see if anyone else is.
You read my mind with this ballot, and my answer is the same as yours.
It is been a long standing matter of history, that Africans sold other Africans into slavery and it should be recognised as the repulsive act it was. This would be an excellent first step toward some sort of closure.
Voted : No, that would be ridiculous
Build a few memorials. Create a holiday. Whatever. But don't arrest me because my uncle is a drug addict.
We should all apologise - All together now......
Voted : An admission of culpabilty should be made
This choice didnt come up on my choice ^^^^ so here it is
Steel: so merely acknowledge that it happend, no blame to anyone living today?
It's easier to blame whitey
I feel that some recompense should be made to ex slaves and their decendants. They were promised some acres and a mule and still havent got it.
Steel: who should pay for it?
Voted : An admission of culpabilty should be made
Now *that*, I could get behind...
Voted : No, that would be ridiculous
Each individual has their own unique merits and demerits. One does not inherit the sins of ancestors. Steelhamster- So for example, if a descedent of an African slave trader is a poor African farmer, and a descedent of a slave is now a middle-class American- do you think that he should give him economic compensation and an official apology? Or do you think its just all become too complex to pretend the situation is that simple?
If people look for obstacles they will find them. As to who will pay for it, noone seems to mind spending trillions on half baked conflicts in the middle east, but ask why a few acres of land and a mule is not an option and people throw up their hands in horror.
Steel: so who exactly? The general populace in taxes, which would include taxing the descendents of slaves. Or only tax whits? What about those whose ancestors had nothing to do with it? I think "who is going to pay for it" is a very relevent question. I think everyone in the US should be given a free bigscreen TV, but let's not quibble over details like "where is the money coming from".
I aint apologizing for SHIIIIIT...
