Contrary to Previous Reports, Cheney Was ‘Basically Summoned’ By Saudi Crown Prince

Last weekend, Vice President Cheney traveled to Saudi Arabia in a visit that “was originally portrayed as U.S. outreach to its oil-rich Arab ally.” Cheney made the trip purportedly to discuss a “range of regional issues,” Cheney’s spokeswoman said. The Associated Press reported that Cheney was “seen as a US diplomatic push to stem surging violence in Iraq.”

But today’s Washington Post reports that the push for the meeting came from the Saudis, not the other way around:

Saudi Arabia is so concerned about the damage that the conflict in Iraq is doing across the region that it basically summoned Vice President Cheney for talks over the weekend, according to U.S. officials and foreign diplomats.

What does it say about the nature of U.S.-Saudi relations when the Vice President can be “summoned” by the Saudi Crown Prince? (Think Progress)

Is it a good thing when the Vice President of the United States can be summoned like a servant by the Muslim, terrorism-funding, dictator of an extreme, Christian-hating theocracy so that Cheney can kiss his ass?

Yes, remember, oil is everything
No, that is disgusting and unAmerican
I'm a neocon, and it's OK if Bush/Cheney do it

did the article say he was summoned like a servant? and if it was such a one-sided relationship, wouldn't they have "summoned" the president himself? and doesn't the president of the usa "summon" other leaders all the time? i doubt very much he was "summoned," but was probably asked with some urgency to come. and or course the white house is going to spin it -- they don't want it getting out that saudi arabia is this alarmed by the situation in iraq.

it was actually an online chate between a washington post reporter and readers and not an acutal article. here is the transcript --

San Francisco, Calif.: Good morning, Peter, thanks for chatting. Has a sitting vice president ever engaged in the kind of shuttle diplomacy that Dick Cheney's been about, with his recent trip to Saudi Arabia? Given Cheney's penchant for secrecy, is it likely the American people will ever hear what transpired on this short, but clearly important, visit by the Vice President?

Peter Baker: Sure, in fact the vice president has traveled to Saudi Arabia on several other occasions. Whether we'll know what was actually said at the meetings is another question. I hope so. One thing our super-sharp diplomatic correspondent Robin Wright picked up on is that the meeting was held at the request of King Abdullah -- suggesting they summoned Cheney to give him an earful, rather than Bush sending him to solicit advice.

^ make that chat. chate is not a word. unless i make it one. going forward, please use chate frequently, as i have now decided it is a word. i just don't know what i want it to mean. IC_tune

I think 'summon' is an exaggeration.

It is more likely that the Saudis requested it, and the Americans agreed to the request.

If the Saudis wanted a meeting, why didn't they send a delegation to meet with Cheney in the U.S.?

cranky- perhaps Cheney was invited there because the Saudis were concerned about the regional problems concerned. As such maybe by being in the region, he could also better meet with politicians from other nations in the region. If not in their actual countries, they could see him while he was in Saudi Arabia. The Saudis did say in the article that their concern was not just Saudi security, but regional security.
