"Hezbollah Demonstrators Gather to Topple Government

By Daniel Williams

Dec. 1 (Bloomberg) -- Tens of thousands of supporters of Hezbollah, the Shiite Muslim party with its own militia, headed toward militarized central Beirut to mount demonstrations aimed to overthrow the pro-Western government of Prime Minister Fouad Siniora.

Soldiers equipped with machine guns, armored vehicles and barbed wire set up barricades to guard government buildings against takeovers. Minibuses and cars festooned with Lebanese flags raced past Hezbollah followers on foot who poured into a square near Siniora's office.

Hezbollah ushers in black kept watch over the periphery of the crowd at Riad Solh Square to keep order. Anytime some one opened a window in Siniora's office overlooking the plaza, the crowd shouted ``Out, out Siniora!''

The protest is the latest episode in a power struggle that pits Hezbollah and allies against the ruling coalition. The government claims Syria is nurturing the conflict in order to dominate the small Mediterranean country. The Nov. 21 assassination of Industry Minister Pierre Gemayel provided an ominous backdrop to the struggle.

Warnings of violence were plentiful. ``They are trying to turn Lebanon into an open battlefield,'' Walid Jumblatt, political leader of the country's Druze minority and a Siniora supporter, said at a press conference.

Hezbollah, which the US State Department labels a terrorist organization, is demanding more representation in the Siniora cabinet to give it veto power and the ability to divert the government from friendship with the United States and France. The party's militia fought a 33-day war with Israel and insists its defense of the country justifies its quest for greater power."

No. They have caused Lebanon enough trouble by creating a war with Israel.

I don't know why they want to stir the pot in Lebanon even more. I guess they just want more power.

And while Syria is a very likely suspect of the recent assassination, I also consider Hezbollah to be a suspect also.

Hezbollah wouldn't shake of foreign influence like it claims it would either. They would let the Iranians and Syrians have a greater influence in Lebanon.

I don't know why Lebanese were against Syria before, and for the Syrian backed Hezbollah now. Maybe because they're against Israel?

All civilized people should be working to marginalize them.

Terrorists have no place in the modern world, they are an anachronism that needs to be swept to the side for everyones benefit.
