INTERNET BARN RAISING : INTERESTED?

you know how those amish people get together and build barns over the weekend?

I got an idea.

instead of paying 30 year mortgages, people can get together for a weekend parties, where they all pull their resources ($100 each) and skills to build a house.

at the end of the day, they have a drawing, and the lucky winner gets the house!

the winner pays a small monthly payment for the next 10 years, which goes towards the next person's land cost, etc.

would such a "barn raising event" work?

Yes, it will work
no, it probably won't

can you build a house for 3000?
by jappy on Mon Dec 04, 06 2:07pm [+]

no, but if you get 1000 people participating each weekend, that would generate 100k for supplies, should be enough for a simple 3000sq ft house.

I think I would rather have professionals build my house instead of people pooling their "skills".

When one wins, they leave the program and are replaced. So... your odds aren't 1/1000 total but 1/1000 every week. That's not bad for $100, but with my luck there's no way I would bother. Plus, like Fiddle, I would not trust a bunch of shlubs to build me an outhouse let alone a home.

Voted : no, it probably won't
I don't think that the "pay it forward" paradigm is viable in real life.

Nice idea, but I'd get my hands all dirty.
