COMMENTS:
Merry Christmas! There's a little too much political correctness about that. Although there are Constitutional reasons for manger scenes to be at a church, I suppose.
Voted : Yet another red herring non-issue.
I don't give a shit if you say Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays. The Neo-conservatives made up this "controversy" in order to distract lazy idiots from the fact that they are fucking up this country and everything else they come in contact with. I've never heard of anyone being offend by the words "Merry Christmas" but acknowledging that their are other religions in the world other than Christianity by using an all inclusive "Happy Holidays" is not anything to be offended by. The bigger question here is why all the NeoCons are offended by the simple idea that their may be other people celebrating other religious holidays during this time of year. It isn't too hard to see the prejudice of these fools.
And a Merry Christmas to you too Jappy. There's a manger scene on our courthouse lawn. So freakin what. Am I Christian? No. Am I offended by it? No. Do my eyes bleed as I look upon the plasticized image of baby Jesus with a lightbulb poking in it's ass? No. The majority of the people where I live are Christian and that's what influences their values and culture. So let them have their day and "Merry Christmas" signs. If I don't like it, I can move.
A red herring non issue? It's a major issue to many communities and businesses who have opted for removing the word Christmas from their celebrations this time of year. I'd hardly call that a RED HERRING NON ISSUE. And for your information, it's also not a NEOCON issue, not unless you consider the vast majority of the United States to be neocons. Christians aren't offended by the idea of other religions celebrating their holidays this time of year, they are offended by the idea of white washing Christmas out altogether.
Christmas (Winter solstice) was around long before the invention of Christanity. The Christmas tree was used by the pagans and many others such as the Vikings for example.
I don't have a problem with that Colin, but when you have a vast majority who celebrate a holiday, and you try to change the name of the holiday in order to avoid offending... offending who I do not even know, because if you really look at it, it doesn't make sense. While there may be those who are offended by the idea of Kwanza and other holidays being celebrated, most people who celebrate Christmas don't care if people want to celebrate their holidays at the same time. The issue this ballot is dealing with is that of those who ARE against Merry Christmas because they find it offensive.
What Robin Gaylord said. Just another excuse for rightwingers to spew hatred at the world.
The issue of "Christmas" is political and deals with the seperation of church and state. Schools, Government agency's and Public institution's employees could not "Officially" take a Christmas vacation since Christmas is a religious holiday. Thus the necessity to change it.
Happy Holidays and good will to all men, women, hermaphrodites of all races, religions and sexual persuasion.
Did you know that when you write "Merry X-Mas" that you are Xing out the Christ in Christmas?
This time of year will always be christmas, just ask any child. :-) Happy christmas Jappy. xxx
But what about people who don't celebrate anything at all? They might get offended by "holiday tree." They should be called "December trees."
This is a very real issue in parts of the country with a large Jewish population.
Sorry to point fibgers, but these sort of problems arise because of people like Wideheadofknowledge and Cranky who, though perhaps with the best intentions, actively seek out innocent traditions that *could* possibly, somehwre maybe offend a member of a "minority". How many Jews/atheists/Hindus etc etc do you think actually care about this? Its the white middle class busybodies here who are the problem.
^Actually, I think some people do get too carried away with neutering the holidays. On the other hand, this Bill O'Reilly-inspired rabblerousing about the "War on Christmas" is totally to the other extreme. And, I used to work with a Jewish guy who went apeshit if anyone referred to the holiday break as the Christmas break. If anyone put up a flier for the holiday party that said "Christmas," or that had anything even remotely religious on it, he would be in the main office complaining and lecturing. He was also bitter that we got Christmas off as a paid holiday, but no Jewish holiday. Plus, he would send out e-mail flames to anyone who scheduled a meeting on a Jewish holiday. Last year, at Christmastime, a Jewish grad student put a guest editorial in my University's newspaper bitterly ranting about how offended she was that a faculty member had said Merry Christmas to a group of students having a chat in the hallway. Of course, she was one of those students, and in her mind, this faculty member had committed a horrendous act of insensitivity. She said she had lost all respect for this professor. Members of various ethnic/religious groups do get bent out of shape about this. I think some over-react, but the rightwingers over-react, too.
Voted : PC police has gone very awry with this.
(Early) Merry Christmas, everyone ! Be sure to send a Christmas card to the ACLU/PC-Police.
And, cracky will blame each and every bad thing on 'neocons'. Hm. What would happen if cracky were to have an original thought ?
Voted : PC police has gone very awry with this.
PC...I *spit* upon them.
Truth is truth no matter what the confused in our society try to make it. Jesus Christ is real and He really did all those things the Bible spells out so clearly. Praise be to Him!
Even bestandworst won't say Merry Christmas on its header on the webpage.
Voted : America is mostly basicly Christian: say 'Merry Christmas'!
When in America, respect the customs of the vast majority, with 'Merry Christmas' and 'Happy Easter', and please 'Learn English' as well!
