CHILD ABUSE, DO YOU INTERVENE?

[+] ballot by LCD
created Fri Dec 08, 06

there is a difficult child in a supermarket.

he is crying and fussing, generally being irritating to everybody in the whole place. The mother, who tried to calm the child down, finally snaps, and proceeds to spank the child (a little to hard in your opinion) in full view of everyone.

do you intervene? or do you let her continue the punishment?

Let the spanking continue
Intervene in the behalf of the child

Voted : Intervene in the behalf of the child
Not just on behalf of the child, but on behalf of the mother. It usually boils down to inconsistant discipline in the long run. Perhaps the mother also has issues and needs counciling. Intervenetion is definately called for if I, ( a strict disciplinarian who'll smack my kid for any form of disrespect), feel she's crossed the line.

If it happens in full view of everybody, they can't claim privacy rights.

Stay out of it, there is no point, probably only make a bad situation worse, if she's doing that in the supermarket in full view of everyone, then what is she doing in privacy of her own home? She might even take it out on the child when she got home if anyone intervened.

Discreetly finding out who she is and reporting her to the relevant authorities would be far more constructive.

In the US each state has a different law on what consititutes as "child abuse". I am not sure how other countries work, but here in Oregon you have to leave a visable mark to have it be considered child abuse.

Although I don't believe in spanking personally, it is other peoples right as a parent to spank.

I suppose you could ask the mother to stop spanking her child, or at least stare her down. But there's nothing you can really do about it that would help matters in the long run, short of calling Social Services to report a "spanking".

I wouldnt as id feel like doing that myself. Personally i would shout at him/her, grab the kid & storm out.

IMO, *any* spamking is severe, though I must admit to a weak spot for children borne of a need to protect them. Still, I'd hold my groundand pbserve. If the spanking seemed to cause physical harm to the child, then I'd step in, and call the police immediately, to let the proper authorities make the determination. Civilians, especially ones not trained in such, make the worst spot judges.

If it's just spanking I'd let it go. There are alot of kids who need a good spanking every now and then, don't pretend you don't know who I'm talking about.

Beyond that though I would intervene.

You nailed it TS (as usual;)...if she oversteps the mark and is outside the parameters of acceptable* corporal punishment ...then intervene to stop it, and tell her you will be reporting her to the relevant social services of your particular juristriction.

Let's not be biased to gender here by the way, fathers can be just as bad, if not worse.

If the spanking is beyond a pat on the rear to get the child's attention, then I would say something to the parent quietly but firmly letting them know it is unacceptable behavior.

If he really needs it, but if it's excessive i'll definatly intervene. There's spanking and then there is child ABUSE, where it crosses that fine line.

My tactic is to say something like "Spanking only teaches children to hit" or "Congratulations on teaching your kid to lie, cheat, and steal in secret so as to avoid spanking, because that's all it ever did for me."

I actually had a situation in a Wal-Mart a couple of weeks ago where a woman threatened to knock my block off for saying something. I simply said, "Well, I see you're clearly a fine product of spanking" to which she hurriedly exclaimed "That's right! Spanking made me who I am today!" About 20 people just looked at her, rolling their eyes, and one guy made a point to walk up to me and tell me that I really opened his eyes, and he was never spanking his children.
