from an e-mail I just got, that there'sa plan underway to try to right and raise the USS Oklahoma from its final resting place at Pearl Harbor. I'm curious to know- do you think that it should be raised, or left where she lies? Please comment.

that's the resting place for many of our soldiers. I don't know why they would even consider such a task....

The link where you can read the story (please edit out the spaces) is http: // www. history. navy. mil/photos/ events/ wwii-pac/ pearlhbr/ ph-ok9.htm

My two cents worth- it's a memorial, *and* the final restin place of a lot of fine human beings. Leave it be.

They should leave it alone
it's something that doesn't need stirring up (and it'll cost millions)

Without knowing anything else about the story I'd say leave it.

Does it mention the reason for raising it? Because it is possible they have a good reason.

I'd say leave it with the sailors who went down with the ship.
I belive it should be up to the families of these brave men...I am with them either way, all the way...
let the dead rest in peace

Bring her back up for everyone to see.

I remember there was talk a few years back of raising it. Then there was a law signed fairly recently recognizing it's former site and/or the mass grave of those who died on it as an official memorial (the official dedication is next year I think). I havent heard of any new talk about raising it, but it would be nice to actually have it at Pearl Harbor.

Oh, and the ship hasnt actually got anyone buried in it. It was raised a couple of years after it sank. Bodies were retrieved and repairs were done. It was docked until it was sold for scrap a couple years later and then sank again during a storm as it was being towed. It's lying at the bottom of the Pacific about 500 miles from Hawaii right now if I'm not mistaken.

That's why I say raise her her and bring her back.

*that should have been just one "her".

Someone jumped in the same room and caused me to skip.

According to a source o' mine, she still leaks oil continuously, which probably makes the water around there pretty foul.

And, I do want to read all about it.

She does, mojo. I saw it for myself when I was at Pearl back in '82.
The only reasons I can think of for raising a ship are a) if the ship sank under mysterious circumstances or b) the ship may contain objects that have historical significance; (assuming divers and robots can't do the job.)
