Lowell kept adjusting his telescope until he saw canals. Modern opthomologists say that the narrow setting he used on his telescope made it work like an opthalmoscope, which maps the interior of the eye. It's likely that his "canals" were shadows of retinal blood vessals.

"Cats sucking breath from sleeping babies" can actually happen. Though they arent deliberately trying to kill the infant by sucking it's breath out. What they do is get up ontop of the baby when it's in it's crib and lick the left over milk out of the baby's mouth, thus suffocating the baby in the process. I actually had a former co-worker who had a nephew that died like that. Everyone assumed it was SIDS until cat hair was found in the mouth and airway during autopsy.
