No reflection on the author, it seems like it belongs on .
We are all free and equal to make choices for our own lives. We are all free to educate ourselves and become successful. Some chose this way of life other do not. They have the free and equal choice. This sounds like a socialist question.
hurricane: You mean you actually chose the life you lead?
Is there such a thing as a 'Free and equal society?'

Why would there not be ? Of course, that's assuming 'equal-opportunity'.
As soon as you find a free and equal society, let me know, so I can move there. Hurricane seem self deluded if he believes what he says. The class you are born into determines much of your life, and although education can lift people out of poverty, some do not have any choice. Take a trip through Asia, Africa and South America and see how many children are forced to work in sweat shops, or are forced to be child soldiers or are forced into prostitution. Even in so called free societies in the west, there is homelessness, poverty and squalor. It is naive to believe that choice is open to all, job insecurity can make people on downsize into the poor house.
One based on merit.
To human beings it means a lot to have more & better things than the other humans have. We'd rather born/blow our world up than ever evolve enough to share it :) Mark my word.

I think so. Besides, who determines what privilege is? To someone who lives in a box, the person who lives in a tiny apartment is privileged. To the person who lives in a tiny apartment, the person who lives in a one bedroom apartment is priviledged. And so on.
Define equal.
What 'Steelhamster' said.
Black_lava, We cannot assume 'equal opportunity.'

Yes and no. In a free and equal society everyone would have privileges, but then they wouldn't really be privileges anymore. I have yet to find such a society.
