'Mallard Fillmore' creator arrested for DU

Hoosier Edward Bruce Tinsley, creator of the conservative comic strip Mallard Fillmore, was arrested in Columbus Dec. 4 and charged with operating a vehicle under the influence -- his second alcohol-related arrest in less that four months, according to the Bartholomew County Sheriff's Department.

Tinsley, 48, who lives in Columbus, had a blood-alcohol level of 0.14 -- almost twice the level at which an Indiana driver is considered intoxicated. He posted $755 bond.
On Aug. 26, Tinsley was arrested for public intoxication, according to the sheriff's department.

Mallard Fillmore, about a conservative duck, appears in almost 400 newspapers nationwide, including The Indianapolis Star. (Indianapolis Star)

In his comic strip, Tinsley has enjoyed mocking Ted Kennedy for his drinking. Do you think that being arrested for drunk driving and public intoxication (including abusive behavior on his arrest) shows Tinsley to be a hypocrite?

Yes, another rightwing hypocrite surfaces
No, being a rightwing drunk is okay
Oy Vey...Hiccup!!!
Tinsley didn't drown anyone and wait a day to call cops like Teddy did.
^Oh, well that makes drunk driving okay, then
You got a problem with that, sugartits?

Here's Tinsley mocking Teddy Kennedy for his drinking.

This Tinsley cartoon was printed just as news of Tinsley's second arrest for being drunk hit the papers. Interesting coincidence.

The main problem with "Mallard Fillmore" would be that it simply isn't very funny. "South Park" is Libertarian in stance, much more offensive, and is often hilarious (or has been in the past).

Frankly, I couldn't give a tinker's damn if Tinsley has been arrested for drunk driving, but I don't think the issue is whether or not he's a hypocrite but rather the sheer laziness of yelling, "Hey, Ted Kennedy's a fat alky!" in a strip and thinking that it's clever humor. On the other hand, I also think "The Boondocks," obviously on the other side politically is an unfunny steaming pile of shit, so there's plenty of bad cartooning to spare on the funny pages these days.

...And, when for that matter has "Doonesberry" been anything more than a sanctimonious, smirking bore of a strip?
by Felix on Wed Dec 13, 06 9:22pm [+]

I had never heard of Mallard Fillmore before, so I read some online. Man, is that strip not funny. Tinsley has some anger and bitterness issues.

I'm on the fence about Boondocks. Sometimes I like it; sometimes I don't.

I can't tolerate Doonesbury. Smug is right. Condescending yuppie shite. I haven't read it in a long time.
