WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE POPULARITY OF SKIN WHITENING CREAM IN EAST ASIA?

[+] serious ballot by xxxxxxxx
created Mon Dec 18, 06

When I was in Asia, I saw in all the major stores: shelves and shelves stocked with 'Skin Whitener' cream. One simply applies it to their skin, and apparently it is supposed to make your skin whiter. Judging from the large number I saw stacked on shelves in so many shops, it seems it is very popular and widely used.

What do you think of the idea of promoting a product in Asia that implies that one is supposedly more attractive by being more white?

An awful idea, it is giving an inappropriate message. It is racist euro-centricism.
I don't mind the idea. If there is a demand for such a product in Asia, then so be it.

I guess it's what they want to do, but it sounds like they've been watching too much hollywood. The same reason some black girls ask their mothers for white dolls, I suppose.

Nice to see a ballot from someone other than IC and co. for a change.

I guess, if that is what a significant number Asian people want... then, such a product is inevitable. I wouldn't support efforts against the product- as it is not the supply that is the problem- it is the demand.

I just in general believe that people would benefit by being content with what they are. But overall, I don't see this product as being all that bad. I was surprised that when I told my socialist friend about this, that she got very angry and vocal in condemning it as supposed racist euro-centricism.

They want to look paler, people here want to look more tan, I'm sure both fads will change sometime in the near future.

I wouldn't mind if individuals were whitening there skin for their own personal enjoyment however I know that is not the case and many East Asians do it inorder to uphold European beauty standards.Such behavior is a relic of colonialism and should be denounced by the intellectuals in East Asia. They should be proud of their culture and physical appearance and stop trying to look like Europeans.
Have you noticed Socrates that the Japanese don't particapate in such behavior. That is because they were never conquered by Europe and were themselves a colonial party. As much as I despies Japanese nationalism I admire their pride in their nation and tradition.I wish the other Asians would follow in their footsteps.

Corrupt - I'm not sure what the cause of it is... be it European colonial influence, modern day Western media influence, or pre-colonial cultural beliefs... I will make a ballot on the topic.

But anyway, as for Japan? As far as I know the product is quite popular there as well. The Japanese do indeed participate in such behaviour as well. But the Japanese, (and the South Koreans, and the Taiwanese) usually push this further than just the skin whitening cream. Cosmetic surgery in those three countries that aim to imitate Western features (such as eyes, etc) are increasingly widespread, especially since Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan are more wealthy, and its more common for its people to waste money on such things. And none of the three nations were ever colonised by the West, and yet all this happens there nonetheless.

And herzog raises an interesting point: how is this skin whitening cream any different from the popularity of fake tanning, and tanning Salons in the West?
by xxxxxxxx on Tue Dec 19, 06 12:36am [+]

The difference being that Westerners who darken their skin do not do it in order to uphold another cultures standard of beauty,we do it for ourselves.Where as Asian do such procedures to look more like Europeans because they associate Whiteness with greatness.

Also you are correct about the eye surgeries in Japan and S.Korea,I forgot about that.I suppose those countries wish to look white not because of Colonialsim but probably because of western media influnece.

I thought LCD had a comment above but it seems to have disappeared.

But I think he was correct in that this reflects their respect for wealth, identified as being able to avoid laboring outdoors, rather than being european.

Being pale and fat in primitive nations is a sign of wealth, as only the very wealthy can avoid doing manual labor and can afford excess food. The same ideal for beauty was found in european societies centuries ago.

Whitened dark skin looks unnatural: sickly, waxy and cadaverous. Whitening the skin is also very uhealthy. All it does is eat away your top layer of the skin and leaves it more prone to bacteria and sun damage. DON'T DO IT.
