Voted : no. why should they have to learn english?
Isn't LAX an international airport. Surely they should be aware that millions of people who dont speak english are likely to pass through the airport every year. They should always be on the look our for a foreigner not understanding instructions When I go abroad and dont understand the language, I'd like it if they gave me some helpful tips, rather than just tell em I should have learnt chinese... so its my fault and my problem! I dont blame it on the staff either... sometimes these things happen. Both sides should have been more with it and realised. It does help if you live in a counry to know the language... but there are a hell of a lot of native english speakers who live all over the world and dont speak say... indian, chinese, thai etc etc. It would help if they did... but you cant start enforcing it on people. in my opinion
Voted : yes, people should speak the language
I believe it's a civil and cultural duty to learn the language of the country one lives in. However this case is way too strange. I mean, i visited countries where i couldnt understand a single word of what the natives said to me and it never occured to me to slide a baby into the x-ray machine. Above anything, this is a case of lack of common sense... not to say pure stupidity.
^ too right - Dopey as f&ck
"There's an obligation on the traveler to use some common sense," said Larry Fetters, the TSA's federal security director at LAX. "If they don't understand, they should ask somebody. If they ask us, we are generally able to find someone who speaks that language and assist them." On its website, the TSA posts extensive tips for travelers, including a section titled "Traveling With Children." One item reads: "Never leave babies in an infant carrier while it goes through the X-ray machine." There are also signs posted in English and Spanish at ticket counters and near security checkpoints warning passengers that they must put metal objects, such as cellphones, pagers and car keys, into bins that go through X-ray machines. ^ from the article maybe mr. susan, but when i went to france a couple of years ago, it was hard to get anyone to speak to me in english. same deal when i went to caracas.
^ Kev that's cos they knew you were an American and thought you were a cunt. I jest, I jest. The French are like that though, ignorant as fuck.

^ what is it with "your" people in calling men cunts? man i hate that. it's a classless word you cum-swalloing whore. i jest, i jest.
Voted : yes, people should speak the language
I don't think it should be mandated that people learn the native language (otherwise I'd have to write this in about 14 different dialects of native American Haha), But if people intend to live in a Country for more than a couple years, I think they should at least try to learn that Country's tounge.
Hey Kev, *Cum swallowing whore* is a derivative of my nickname for my youngest son (in jest of course). It used to irritate the shit out of him when I'd call him a *cum drinking whore*. (Bare in mind too, He is an adult, though come to think of it, I'm not).
^ Ah now I disagree. I love the word cunt. Not in reference to the female genitalia mind you, I have other words which I prefer to use in that context. Such as goother and winyagogg. No I like to use the word cunt to describe a person, an entire person or maybe even a group of persons, all together like a shower of cunts. Take Spanish students for example. The congregating on street corners, or huddling around one pint of Guinness, shower of cunts. See? Or another example of usage would be those "can you spare a few euro for the bus sir" people who follow you down the street explaining how they were mugged and had their wallet stolen and you knowing full well that same header was doing the same thing yesterday, now either he’s terribly unlucky or he’s lying to get money out of you. Now to them you should say fuck off you tedious cunt. See it’s a great word.

^ man, but you are a collasal cunt! maybe i hate the word for obvious reasons. think on that one b_p, you tedious cunt. passive - i have no choice but to call child services.
Voted : Both share the blame
Many of the people going through LAX are not residents of the US. We shouldn't expect visitors to know the language. The workers at the airport should have been more attentive. At the same time, what kind of idiot puts a baby through an x-ray machine?
Voted : It is the woman's fault (she is too stupid to travel alone)
I don't think this is a case of language, but rather a case of absolute stupidity on the part of the mother. I have been through many international airports where people spoke a billion different languages and not a single one was so incredibly stupid to do what this woman did!!!
Voted : yes, people should speak the language
Yes, and she is obviously too stupid to be left to her own devices.
The article doesn't mention her citizenship. She's more likely just traveling. Lucky for us all, you don't have to learn the language of a country you are visiting. The article also goes on to say this is the 2nd time in 20 years an infant went through an X-ray machine at LAX. In that time span over a billion people have traveled through LAX.
to be fair - I have nothing against the french... but many french people really resent having to speak English. It really isn't a priority of theirs. They can be very nationalistic. Kev24 - Good quotes - that makes sense. To me it just shows that she was a dopey fool... and not that she should learn english. As you say, she could easily have gotten by if she'd asked for a spanish speaking member of staff.
^ first comment in response to Kev24 too. Also - 'Cunt' amuses me. I would never call someone a cunt maliciously. I only started using it on occasion with friends beause it was such an abrassive over the top insult... so insulting that you've got to laugh about it
Yea, the French can be a bit too nationalistic sometimes.
^ they look like zombies. "yes, i will obey you master bush. yes, i will follow you off a cliff master bush. yessss, i will submit to you master bush." good lord.
Kev, The kid is 22, Somehow, I don't think Child Services are going to take you to serious. Haha
what the hell are they playing at - They look reiculous. Are they taking the piss out of America??? Terorists!!
Voted : yes, people should speak the language
And that starts with us here at home. Myself included. Further, I should ask this- for anyone who's ever traveled outside the US, has your speaking the Queen's English been welcomed abroad?
22? how old are you passive?
Um, Wise old! My oldest son is 25. And venturing a guess, I'd lay money that he's older than you my friend. I paid my dues, time after time, I done my sentence, but committed no crime, and bad mistakes......Well, you know the rest. ... *We are the Champions my friend*....
