IS SPENDING AN ADDITIONAL 100 BILLION DOLLARS IN IRAQ LIKE...

[+] serious ballot by thesoothsayer
created Thu Dec 21, 06

...investing in a sinking boat ? Knowing that once you stop bailing the water the boat is going to sink...does it make sense to put off the inevitable unless your plan is to defer the problem to the next administration at the tax payer's expense ? At what point should it be time to "abandon ship" ? then there's the unmeasureable cost in human lives...

Yes, it's a bad investment
No, we must keep "bailing"
It's time to "Stand Down"
It will help them get the power they went in there to get.
Bush isn't spending his money, so why would he care?
No, it's like putting 100,000,000,000 in Cheney's pocket

Voted : Yes, it's a bad investment
There should be some sort of deadline for a phased withdrawal.

I also find it fairly ironic that a lot of the money we're borrowing in order to build a democracy in Iraq is coming from the authoritarian, socialist, communist government in China.

Voted : It will help them get the power they went in there to get.
Whenever they've done what they went in there for, they'll withdraw. The 100 billion is probably wisely spent from the perspective of those who want to see the future power of the US. The gov wouldn't spend it unless it could get them something in the longrun.

The money wont bring peace and stability... or a 'real' democracy, but it probably will help the US get what it wants.

Why else would they spend it?

That's throwing good money after bad. Let's cut our losses and bring everybody home. (Don't hold your breath, though)

Applerod, that's interesting. Where do you get this imformation?
by xhiker on Fri Dec 22, 06 8:36am [+]

I have to correct Applerods assertion, China is an authoritarian government, nothing more.
by Steelhamster on Fri Dec 22, 06 9:02am [+]

Bush and Congress have already provided more than $500 billion for the two conflicts and worldwide efforts against terrorism, including more than $350 billion for Iraq.
by thesoothsayer on Fri Dec 22, 06 10:15am [+]

sooth, is it worthwhile to you if in 10 years Iraq is a stable country with an elected representative government?
by jappy on Fri Dec 22, 06 11:42am [+]

I stand corrected.
Which information?
by Applerod on Fri Dec 22, 06 12:07pm [+]

^Re: info. I don't know much about China. When I thought China I thought "communism". I then went on to wikipedia to see if I was right, which I was not. The article says the government of China is actually a combination of communism, socialism, and authoritarianism. So I took that as gospel and copied it down for accuracy. It was late and I didn't want to follow that up with more research, which I should have.

re: U.S. borrowing money from China to pay the national debt. I remember reading a couple articles about this, and just now I've searched and found many more articles declaring that a large amount (roughly half I believe) of our enormous national debt is being held by foreign countries, including China. So it's ironic that we'd be borrowing money from an un-democratic country to pay the national debt which has increased in large part by our expenditures in Iraq, including all of the money devoted to the so-called "founding of democracy".
by Applerod on Fri Dec 22, 06 12:42pm [+]

Until the US has democracy and not a plutocracy, they can hardly be the ones tp preach to others
