Currently only homicides have no statute of limitation on prosecution for the crime. Advocates for this change say it gives law enforcement a chance to charge sex offenders to the full extent of the law once they are captured, for all the sexual assaults they have committed. They also believe that, short of murder, sexual assaults are the most horrific crimes that can be perpetrated, therefore should have extra time to prosecute to allow the victims closure. Opponents say that this would be unfair to those accused of such crimes because it gives any person the power to effectively destroy a person's reputation at any time for a crime they did not commit. Those against this change believe also that the relatively recent controversial surge in 'lost memory recovery', which has been shown to be inaccurate in many cases, could ruin many innocent people's lives.
