IS IT REALLY RIGHT TO BLAME THE UNITED STATES FOR NUCLEAR WEAPONS?

[+] serious ballot by jappy
ACTIVE Fri Dec 22, 06 - Wed Sep 16, 09

I find it interesting that the United States takes so much heat over having 'invented' nuclear weapons. Over the last 60 years people have debated the creating and use of such weapons as to whether they were necessary, many point fingers at the 'audacity' of the US for creating such a weapon.

But is that a fair statement? There have been studiest that concluded that several nations would have likely come up with nuclear weapons on their own had the United States not done so, just later on in time.

This being said, what other country would have been a better choice to have created them first? Because, if we are to be honest about nuclear weapons, blaming the United States for them as a whole seems rather ignorant given that other countries would have gone ahead and created nuclear weapons themselves. Is the United States really to blame?

Yes, it is rather silly to blame the US for the creation of nuclear weapons.
No, the US should be blamed for inventing nuclear weapons.

COMMENTS:
And, just to cut these comments off beforehand:

1) Yes, the united states is the only actual country to use nuclear weapons against another country. There was a war going on at the time. This ballot isn't asking that.

woops, got cut off
2) much of the technology used in nuclear weapons, especially the missile technology, was actually done by German scientists.

Well, science made it possible, the heat of war created a need to organize and use all that talent, the Japanese gave us a target. Since the knowledge was out there, it was only a matter of time before the USSR or some other nation invented the bomb at some point, I suppose. So it depends on hoy you look at it.

Most of the blame could be lain at the feet of Einstein or perhaps Oppenheimer with a nod to Braun, all Europeans and no doubt the weapons would have been made, whatever country they were in.

But does the US and others, really need so many?

Science isn't limited by borders or ideology, any nation could have developed them, and would have if we hadn't first.

And I think there were few nations in those days (or now) who could have been trusted to act as responsibly with their nuclear monopoly as we had. Imagine stalin with nukes, and no one else. Say good bye to europe, the east coast, pretty much the entire world.

The US is criticised for USING its nukes, not for inventing them. You've set up a strawman argument here, based on a mistruth (i.e. that people regularly, or even rarely, criticise the US for inventing nukes, as opposed to criticism for USING them)

You assertion that the ballot isnt asking that is correct, however that shouldnt choke conversation on the matter within this ballot or anything else.

The US was wrong to use nukes at the time and place it did.

Steel. Einstein did NOT develop the atomic bomb. He warned FDR that the development of the atomic bomb was a real possibility. The development of the atomic bomb was led by Oppenheimer.

Voted : No, the US should be blamed for inventing nuclear weapons.
Makes no sense at all.

You've gone beyond the usual ignorance to blatant stupidity, Draw, after being told that the ballot doesn't ask that question and asked to not comment on that particular subject, you went and commented on it anyway, kudos, your flatulance is noted.
