Made me cringe every time I happened to glance at a paper and turn on the internet. The picture was everywhere. To me it was horrible. Why did everyone have to show that disgusting shot.

saddam hussein got what he deserved, put personally i think it was too gud for him,he should have been let to rot in a cell and tortured slowly, like he did to all his victims

Life is precious, no matter who it is. This execution makes the new regime in Iraq no better than the old one. If justice was to be served, Saddam should have left alone in his miserable, little spider hole.
someone has voted that they are chuffed by it. Surprise, surprise. What a complete half wit that person must be. A coward for not commenting with it
lets make that 2 cowards

I am and always have been against the death penalty.

Totally agree with _Belzebubba. The trial and the execution were a farce. Anyone noticed the similarities between his hanging and those in the Middle Ages?
What do you make of the executioners chanting "Muqtada, Muqtada"? Why hasn't anyone taken out that fat fuck yet?
I wanted to see footage of him being nailed to a cross & doused in petrol plus having a live grenade being shoved in his mouth and then sharing the satisfaction of seeing his head explode.

I've had the displeasure of witnessing two executions in my life. Nothing about it is cause for celebration, even though I do suppport the concept of capital punishment.

The movie footage is at Military.com, Hard to watch. Browse the videos. Sad thing to watch some one hang.

Saddam deserved death, but I don't like capital punishment.
haven't seen it - don't want to
An eye for an eye...
Well Saddam's execution didn't bother me if that's what you are referring to.
-1 - gasping for more
Smoothdiamond - you're just a fool. I cant take your half witted comments seriously - you're clearly just an antagonist. go away
oo, that's me told
that was easy
he shouldnt have been hung...i say firing squad...formed up of his own former soldiers. I dont wholly agree with capital punishment but then he is the cause of that war...a war i fought in. So i think justice is done. Not that it does me any favours since i've been to Helmand afghanistan since then.

For some reason I wasn't horrified by it. Maybe it's because of some of the things I've read about the depths of Hussein's inhumanity. He's not a monster but he did make a beast of himself through crimes against humanity, such as genocide, torture, and systematic killing.
Brit_airborne - You seriously must be one brave man to fight for whatever your government choses. I could ever do that - Fair play to you Saddam was not the reason for that war though. That is 100% blatently clear. He is purely the scape goat for that war. The military is well known for ensuring it's soldiers/personel believe they are fighting for a just cause with an easily identifiable enemy. For you they clearly chose saddam. Unfortunatly it seems they fooled you. If you're living in a situation where thats all your told, I'm not surprised you were fooled, most people would be. I dont want to offend or piss you off... but lets get some reality in to this. The war was not about this man.
applerod - that human was just about to die in front of a room of people. It's easy to hate because of somebodies actions, it doesn't mean you can't feel empathy for them. Institutional murder... the most insane and unnacountable type of murder there is
^ Agreed. He was heartless, that doesn;t mean we have to be as well. Allow him human dignity and show compassion, Lead by example, don't follow his. I know its tasteless but can't resist :
I do not support the death penalty, with the probable exception of genocidal dictators and possibly mass murderers. On the one hand Saddam's crimes were so egregious that nothing you could do to him would ever be sufficient to "make up" for them. There was no reason to put him to death I can personally relate to on any level. On the other hand there was no good reason in my mind to keep him alive. It's really a matter of opinion. The most common reason I've known in favor of keeping him alive is if one is personally opposed to the death penalty without any possible exception. The most common reason I've known in favor of putting him to death is he was found guilty of massacre. It probably would have been best--if for no other reason than public relations--if they kept the trial going to cover the worse crimes he committed, since the ones they covered were just the tip of the iceberg. Yes, the image of a person being hanged is unsavory to say the least, but occasionally it matters who is in the noose. I'm sure if I were an Iraqi victimized under his regime, having Hussein on the platform would be as important as if it were my own mother.
-also, if they had a four hour-long sequence of photovideo footage documenting the things that happened to people under his regime, it might make these things more real. Seeing images and sounds of real things happening is a lot different than reading about or discussing them.
What Purpose does executing him serve?

If it's anyone I love or care for then it'd tear me up completely.. But really, anything to decrease the population is cool with me, people die all kindsa ways, it's never easy.. but so it goes

passiveson - Makes it look like the US rid the world of an evil dicatator. Means the US can petend to be the saviour of Iraq rather than the destroyer. Gives the appearance that at least something good came out of the masacre/genocide in Iraq. Antagonises the muslim world by deliberatly doing it on a sacred day.
Mr. Susan, All very good answers.... ....Provided that the people of the world are deceived by the current US administrations propaganda. I hope that that's not the case though. We must begin to exhibit a growth in a global consciousness beyond that of our primative ancestors. Are we still so unevolved that we act in violence and malice to the violent and malice? It requires a global consciousness to put aside our emotional hostilities and primative instincts. doesn't anyone want to reach the next evolution in humanities maturity? I swear, If life does exist beyound Earth, It's going to expect us to be more civilized and receptive to *alien* Ideologies if we're to be openly introduced to other worlders.
What purpose does executing him serve? Legitimized (trial-based) justice, as well as symbolizing "the end" of the Hussein era.

"Are we still so unevolved that we act in violence and malice to the violent and malice?" Yes. And if anything we're devolving as we respond to each other in the same fashion we would have 100,000 years ago, except now in the context of an environment which is expanding at a rate faster than our ability to adapt to it.
^ A very Astute observation Apple.
