Media, popular opinion and Government opinion sway the answer too much for me. I think they are dangerous.

Mass populations are swayed... adn rarely on mass are they well informed about the effects of the possible results.... or the motives behind media dn government bias.

Like democracy, it seems fair, in reality though it seems to easily corruptable

Mainly when they concern matters which are not strictly political and require a great deal of "personal conscience" (like the legalization of abortion, for example).
I do notice, however, that politicians and civil groups often imbue their campaigns with demagogy and populism and the public sometimes becomes confused.

seamus ^ true that is a topic where I can see it may be OK

Still they would be swayed by media respone and governmental response to the Q... which is almost always completely biased in one way or the other

E.g - In Switzerland there was a referendum to decide whether they should continue having an army.

I dont understand how the everage swiss person could possibly understand all the issues that are involved in this. It comes down to a vote about Ideologies and not about how it could effect the nation.

PIt would take a whole lot of personal research to fully understand the topic.

Instead they are likely to get their info from Media, government and bandwagons of popular support one way or the other.

In this particular ref - 36% voted to get rid of the army. So they've still got one

Venezuela has shown referendums can be a terrible way to decide important issues. But hey, maybe they would work somewhere else.

But, does anyone believe that civil rights would have been approved by referendum in the South during the 1960's?

ABC - but cant that opinion be easily manipulated? People voting for things they dont fully understand is dangerous in my mind

Not if the coup only removes those who are violating human rights.
