[+] serious ballot by Mithrandir created Tue Jan 16, 07 A DoD official, namely Cully Stimson, deputy assistant secretary of defense for detainee affairs has called for US corporations to boycott law firms whose attorneys are representing suspected terrorists (or enemy combatants) held at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, pro bono. Five hundred US attorneys have filed unlawful detention lawsuits on behalf of Guantanamo detainees. None of the enemy combatants have been charged with crimes. The attorneys say that all people should be treated equally before the law. The DoD official says the law firms are representing terrorists responsible for damaging their bottom lines following the attacks of Sept. 2001. DoD has since distanced itself from Stimson, saying that his statements do not reflect the department views nor that of its leadership. I think the detainees are innocent until proven guilty, and should be charged with crimes if there is sufficient evidence of them, and if not they should be released. I think the attorneys are right to defend the rights of the detainees and I think it is wrong to try and intimidate attorneys defending the rule of law.
