If you see an obese person romantically coupled with a slender, athletic body build, do you give it a second thought or develop cynical assumptions?
What about a person who IS (to almost ANYONE'S eye) UNATTRACTIVE paired with a person of supermodel or male bodybuilder physique and good looks?

I assume an UNKNOWN factor exists. (ie money, sexual prowess, professional prestige, etc)
I assume that they were naturally drawn together by love
I assume nothing. I ask the good looking one what the HELL he/she was thinking about.
I figure it's none of my business.

I despise gossip and couldn't care less what other people do, it's none of my business.

^"...question itself tells me..."
nope, you read the question wrong. but, if I were a person in a position such as you've described yourself, I'd probably be a bit "touchy" about it myself. no offense taken.

When I think of a couple belonging together or not, I usually think in terms of interests, temperament, intelligence, way of thinking and other psychological factors--never physical attributes. It's psychological compatability that makes a successful couple.

Sometimes I see a couple and I think - 'eh?'
Then I think think "lucky SOB!"

From a biological perspective it is indeed strange to see two physical opposites together. Good looks are normally an indicator of strong genes after all, and our instincts would seek out a partner with good genes for sucessful propagation.

However, as we know, nurture and experience play as important part in formation of personality and preference as genes, and perhaps the woman associates the qualities this man perhaps possesses, i.e intelligent, succesful financially, as indicators of the gens needed to thrive in the modern world, rather than genes for good physical characteristics that perhaps so important as they used to be before the relatively recent meteoric rise to success of mankind.

Or they could just be in love, which then begs the question, does love have a biological purpose/component?

Call me a sily romantic but when I see odd couples I just chalk it up to true love. There is more to a relationship then physical appearance.

It's how they feel about each other that matters.

I *never* assume such. When I was engaged, my Kay was a small, beautiful woman, while I was a tall, IMO average-looking guy (though I have been told otherwise of late). People looked at the two of us and asked the same thing, out loud and in their glances at us. I told them exactly where they could file their opinions.
