MUSLIM LEADERS LEAVING THE NETHERLANDS IN LARGE NUMBERS?

"AMSTERDAM – Muslim prayer leaders are leaving the Netherlands because they no longer feel welcome, increasing the risk that radicals could to fill the void, a Muslim leader said in an interview published on Thursday.
Mohamed Ousalah, the vice-president of the Dutch Association of Imams, was quoted in the De Telegraaf newspaper saying that 180 of 450 mosques in the Netherlands no longer had an imam because foreign-born imams were leaving the country.

Ousalah blamed the departure an intolerant atmosphere towards Muslims since the Sept. 11 attacks in the United States and tougher immigration controls by the Dutch government.

He warned the lack of guidance from more moderate imams at leaderless mosques increased the risk that extremists could step in to fill the vacuum with radical agendas.

'The situation is critical,' Ousalah said. 'In Amsterdam, The Hague and Utrecht, dozens of imams have left. And that trend continues in other places.'

The Dutch government has clamped down on immigration, threatened to deport failed asylum seekers and demanded new migrants learn Dutch and complete a mandatory integration course.

'Since the attacks of September 11 2001, imams have been connected with extremists and terrorists. They are faced with an enormous image problem,' Ousalah was quoted as saying.

'The government is also guilty because it is doing nothing about the problem,' he said. 'Even worse, the politicians are often calling for imams to be expelled.'

The Netherlands, which has about 1 million Muslims out of a population of 16 million, has historically been regarded as a tolerant society, but ethnic and racial tensions have risen in recent years.

Filmmaker Theo van Gogh was murdered by a Dutch-Muslim militant in 2004 for a film he made with Ayaan Hirsi Ali, a Somali-born Dutch politician critical of Islam. In an interview with Reuters last month, the Dutch National Coordinator for Counterrorism said a growing number of Dutch youngsters were adopting radical Islam.

Some imams have returned home to Morocco while others have moved to other European countries such as Belgium or Spain where they face fewer restrictions."

COMMENTS:
Are the moderate Muslims in the Netherlands so few in number that of those who have gone, that there are only radicals or Moroccan immigrants to replace them?!?

Besides which, how are we to assume that all the ones that left were 'moderate'?

Voted : No, not necessarily
Depends on which type are leaving, the radicals or the moderates?

I think efforts to combat radical islam within the islamic community should come primarily from the followers themselves. They shouldn't count on moderate leaders appearing, and then following whoever does show up (radical or otherwise). They should ignore their radicals, or even better, condemn them. And these imams will be left powerless without an eager following.

Herzog, it's not easy for Muslims to integrate, so sometimes kids look to a leader, like an imam.
by aya on Sun Jan 21, 07 4:44pm [+]

Aya: it's as easy for them to integrate as it is for any immigrant group, but they have to want to integrate, and many don't.

aya- I agree with herzog. I place faith in Muslims that they should be capable themselves to condemn radicals, rather than the Dutch government being responsible to ensure the sensible people are in charge at mosques. I do not think of Muslims as empty and mindless without minds of their own- I do beleive they can and should be able to recognise and condemn the radical leaders themselves.

As for disillusioned youths? I believe the demographics of Muslims that attend mosque has quite a large adult attendance- and they can be responsible by condemning any radical leaders above them, and guiding their children below them.
