IS IT APPROPRIATE FOR FOX TO KNOWINGLY BROADCAST LIES?

Last September, over 100,000 ThinkProgress readers demanded ABC tell the truth about 9/11. You helped expose the factual inaccuracies and partisan misrepresentations in ABC’s controversial docudrama “The Path to 9/11.”

Here we go again. This Sunday, Fox News’ Sean Hannity is planning to broadcast the fictitious scenes that ABC found unfit to air.

The original docudrama contained a false, dramatic scene where former National Security Adviser Sandy Berger refuses to give the order to the CIA to take out bin Laden. According to the bipartisan 9/11 Commission report, this scene never occurred, and several members of the 9/11 Commission criticized the scene. The conservative writer of the film was forced to acknowledge that the scene was “improvised.”

It’s one thing for Fox News to provide their usual biased political commentary. It’s another thing to promote discredited fiction as news. Sean Hannity’s executive producer told the Los Angeles Times today that Hannity and Fox News “feel the American people deserve both sides.” The only two sides in this case are fiction and fact. It’s our obligation to stand up for the facts.

* * * * * * * *

The scenes in question were cut from the movie because they were totally untrue and, essentially, rightwing propaganda. Should FOX News, via Sean Hannity's show, broadcast those scenes even though everyone agrees they are lies?

Yes, Fox should feel free to lie, as long as it supports the right
No, news media should avoid intentionally lying
No, but Fox usually do not lie. CNN lie more often.
Yes, Freedom of the press
Lets ask CBS and Dan Rather

Very bad idea. I've written to them about this, but I'm sure it's futile.

GREAT visual by the way. Makes me want to see Sunset Boulevard ... again :-))

No, it's not appropriate, but unfortunately it's not illegal either. In 2003 FOX won an appeal in the Monsanto BGH reporting case that "distorted reporting was not illegal". So FOX was able to fire reporters who refused to lie.

Is it Fox news that is or did broadcast the docudrama or is it the regular Fox (that shows the Simpsons)? While I don't think that even a docudrama should knowingly broadcast lies, good luck in getting Hollywood to go along. Pretty much every movie made about a historic event is filled with inaccuracies and made up stuff.

^That a good point F.F Hollywood movies are infamous for taking liberties with the facts in order to sell a story.

Voted : No, news media should avoid intentionally lying
No network should show a deliberate lie as any legitimate side of any story.

Sorry folks but it's not your decision unles you intend to amend the constitution. It's an important constitutional right that must be upheld. If FOX News chooses to air a known lie presenting it as truth, their credibility will suffer, ratings will fall and the network's revenues will suffer when advertiser dollars affect annual profits. Stock holders will insist on no more false broadcasts. That's the process.

passiveson, I think we all agree that FOX should be allowed to broadcast lies, it's just that this is a question asking whether, from a moral standpoint, it should broadcast them in the first place.

Fox News is ridiculous though. I don't spend too much time criticising it, because its not worth even that much amount of my attention. I don't think anyone takes that channel seriously anyway.

Voted : No, news media should avoid intentionally lying
But then again, the entire FOX News franshise would collapse if they eschewed intentional lying.

No, but what are you going to do?

Complain to the owners? You'll risk being "labelled".

Himself809, The question is *Is it appropriate....*, The answer is yes, it is appropriate.

Why ask a question if everyone is expected to vote on some seemingly obvious answer?

If it wasn't appropriate to publish nonsense and lies, 25% of the ballots on this site should be banned right along with FOX News!

Ban the press for tainting the news? There goes every news network reporting on Iraq, President Bush and foreign policy. HA
Burn the books, Jimmy Carter soured the milk.
Censor the networks, People might actually believe the Movie scene.
