I think the real question is how do we judge what "Religion" really is, and by what merits?
Voted : Maybe
Given that all religions are based on belief rather than proven fact, it gives them a pretty strong arguement lol.

They know for sure it is based on fictional work, so I don't think it qualify as a bona fide religion...wanna be "trekkies" don't count...

Sounds like a joke.

Well, there are people who worship rats in the world. For me, though, it's not enough. And I can't help but wonder what would've happened if "Star Wars" had flopped...
part of the philosophy i live by is based on the shadow jedi. the idea is basically that the light and dark sides are not of the force, but of people's minds, and without using both, nothing functions. passion (dark) is meant to fuel reason (light).

Religion is defined as faith, practice, rite and ceremony. If this group registers their Articals of incorperation as a non profit organization and compose principle by-laws of governence Constituting a Church (per se), attributed to worship of *the Force*, at least in the US, they become a religion. Will they be taken seriously? Not Likely!

An irrational belief in a fairy tale. Sounds like religion to me.

What I consider to be the best definition of religion is: "A culturally varied response to the sacred." I suppose sub-cultures could be included in that definition, and to the extent their conviction is sincere and they truly believe the Force plus ideas peripheral and attached to be sacred, then it's a religion. You can't be part of the Force as a religion just because you like Star Wars. You really have to commit yourself to it.
Why not? The Christian Spiritualist Church was {purportedly} founded on the back of a hoax perpetrated by two young sisters http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spiritualist_Church So why not spawn one off the back of a concept in a movie. esp. as that concept looks to me like an amalgam of many different real cultural/religious trad.s

What winston said.
yes, the jedi are a blend of shaolin monks, samurai, and knights of the round table, and the force is almost identical to qi.
