New Girl: The whole "states rights" controversy was over the "right" of Southern states to maintain slavery. In that context, there is no separating the two. And no, I don't support big government control. I would, however, expect the federal government to abolish slavery.

New Lava: Slavery in the South was abolished by the Civil War and the Emancipation Proclamation. The States' Rights movement preserved slavery.
