WOULD YOU VOTE FOR A PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE WHO WAS A DECLARED ATHEIST?

[+] serious ballot by Mithrandir
created Mon Feb 19, 07

I saw a USA Today/Gallup Poll that said that only 45% of respondents would vote for a qualified candidate nominated by their party if that person was a declared atheist. 55% would vote for a homosexual candidate, 67% for someone married more than 3 times, and 72% for a Mormon.

Not wanting to be partisan or even national, I have seen many heads of state in several countries who claimed to be religious who were just as prone to incompetent, dishonest and even criminal behaviour as anyone else. It seems to me that claiming religious status is just a political tool to make voters identify with a perceived value set, glorified in principle, but largely ignored in pratice.

Would you vote for a candidate that was a declared atheist?

No, that person would be godless!
Yes, that person would probably be more honest than most
It makes no difference to me

Sure. I think I'd actually prefer a non-religious leader.

I couldn't give a toss about what a politician chooses to be or do in his/hers private life, I only care about what their policies are.

Unless of coarse things they do in their private life condradict policies they want the public to accept. For example, Ruth Kelly.

It doesn't make any difference to me what a candidate believes, as long as they're is not dogmatic and fundamentalistic with their beliefs.

I'm not religios by any means, but I neither want it pushed on people or taken away from people. And I have talked to quite a few atheists who would just assume that every mention of religion in public life is gone. That's just as bad as having it pushed on you.

Best lifeform for the job, IMO. Though an atheist might win me over a bit more readliy, were he/she to promise that a firmer separation between Church and State would be established.

So many people say so many different things about religion that I would focus on practical matters.
