note: I am talking about people whose advice is unsolicited.

The two ways that I have found to shut people up (nicely) was to say 1 - Thank you, I'll give your advice some consideration. 2 - Thank you, but I'm dealing with this my own way. I'm having trouble finding a good job - I have one but I hate it, and you wouldn't believe the kind of advice I am getting even when I'm not asking for it. But I think people are either motivated by trying to be helpful (even if they're not) or showing how successful and important they are (even if they're not) - so I've taught myself not to take their butting in personally. It wasn't easy. The worst of it, I still hate my job.
Voted : TOTALLY!
Especially when they have never been through any hardships at all and feed you Dr. Phil bullshit. Sorry, but uh docotor Phil doesn't know how to fill the pantry when it is empty. I give advice, the only advice that I have experience with that I hit rock bottom and pulled myself out by my fingernails... to help, not to boost my ego.
Voted : Yes, I have experienced this phenomenon.
It seems you were brought up just right. We all love you for just being yourself. Some people are always going to be obtrusive. I sometimes welcome it as an opportunity to ƒu¢k with their heads and falsely satisfy their curiousity.
Just ignore them. You do things your way and they do or don't do it the way they say.
Don't let them cramp your style. Try telling them why you do things the way you do, or if you're uncomfortable with being that direct, just tell them that you're dealing with it your own way like Mithrandir said.
People don't tend to offer me unasked-for advice on how to live my life, mainly because I'd cut 'em off at the heels for being so presumptious :-) PS Have you ever read "Death of a Salesman", mojo? It depicts this phenomenon nicely.

And I give them one good laugh before walking away, lady.

I don't mind people giving me advice if I'm presenting them with a problem that I may have, but when people like my family start trying to tell me what I should and shouldn't be doing I let it go in one ear and out the other. Or "turn a deaf ear" as my mother-in-law used to say.

Maybe some people have big egos. Well, maybe more than maybe. :)

I agree that some people can be snobs. However if they have something informative to say that will be helpful to you or for the betterment of society as a whole, and they do it in a caring, non-aggressive manner then I don't see anything wrong with that. It's not about who is right, it's about coming together to figure out what is right.
