Voted : Black music is any music performed by black people
I'd say that black music would be music performed by black people. Hmmm... but if it is a group like the Black Eyed Peas who have non-black member, that probably doesn't count, because it is not racially pure enough. And people who are only half-black probably are not racially pure enough either. This issue of race is afterall VERY VERY important- it is what keeps the Earth spinning. Human society should obsess over race for the rest of their time. But it isn't 'racism' it is just good and wholesome 'pride' to obsess and categorise things into racial divisions. You are a racist bigot if you cannot see that.
Voted : Black music, is specifically musical style that whose first founders were black
IMO, it's music that is unique to the black American culture: jazz and blues.

^ Okay, so I was being sarcastic. I believe categorising music as 'black' is entirely ridiculous. By the way apparently black music month is June.
mojo- If one were to go by that definition, then one would conversely have to see classical music as 'white music'. I would find that offensive because I am not white, but I enjoy playing classical piano. As for jazz and blues; there are plenty of white people, and indeed many other races that enjoy playing jazz. Are these non-black jazz musicians embracing a culture that distant form themselves and is not theirs? Or is it more common sense to believe that jazz culture would be anyone of any race that embraces jazz?
By classifying some musical styles as black, and therefore others as white, doesn't that in some ways promote stereotypes that people should like or play certain music based on their race? Isn't that stereotyping and racist? This is black music, that is white music, etc? I really do believe that it would be better to just stop racism, and just see appreciate music for the music and not obsess over race, classify music into race, and therefore promote racist social expectations of what styles individual people are 'supposed' be liking.
then one would conversely have to see classical music as 'white music'. I would find that offensive because I am not white, but I enjoy playing classical piano.
^A perfect example of the commonly accepted hypocrisy/double standard. Can you imagine anyone accepting classical music as "white" music? God! why cant people see the racism?!
I knew someone would pick up on this when I posted the list of "months" that are declared by presidential proclamation. Black Music Month, 2006 A Proclamation by the President of the United States of America African-American musicians have added to the rich culture of our country and of countries around the world. During Black Music Month, we recognize the African-American artists who have enhanced our lives and created some of our Nation's most treasured art forms. Throughout history, African-American artists have produced music with the power to change hearts and shape our national conscience. From gospel to blues, from jazz to rock and roll, the songs of America's black musicians have defined our times and enriched our culture. Performers such as Count Basie and Dizzy Gillespie and vocalists such as Lizzie Miles and gospel singer Mahalia Jackson have made their mark as great American musicians, strengthening our Nation's diversity and lifting the human spirit. In 2005, Americans witnessed the power of music to help bring our country together. Following the devastation of the Gulf Coast by Hurricane Katrina, the musicians of that great region sought to preserve their unique musical style and culture and share it with the rest of the Nation. The soulful music of New Orleans and the Gulf Coast remains one of our national treasures, a symbol of creativity and hope. Black Music Month recognizes some of the brightest lights of American creativity and honors the African-American men and women whose art entertains and inspires us. The incredible talents of black musicians continue to speak to every heart, reflecting the beauty and pride of our great Nation. NOW, THEREFORE, I, GEORGE W. BUSH, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim June 2006 as Black Music Month. I encourage all Americans to learn more about the history of black music and to enjoy the great contributions of African-American musicians. IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this twenty-fifth day of May, in the year of our Lord two thousand six, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirtieth. GEORGE W. BUSH There you go. Like all other months an opportunity to educate and celebrate the rich contributions various groups have to made to the diversity of the US.
^What exactly have you proven there? That George Bush, a semi illiterate moron, has been told to endorse a Black Music month? What does that prove? Answer me this, would youi object to classical music being called "white music"? Yes or no please.
OKAY, I am a racist. *backs out quietly * See yuz.

Voted : I agree, it's a BS category.
I'm a musician, and all music is black and white. Check the sheet music.

You seem to have good options here, it could be music blacks listen to, which is any kind of music. Music where blacks participate, again, any type of music. And if we're doing ones that were founded by blacks can we exclude any that involve styles or instruments that originated with whites? And like you said, should classical music, or hell, rap performed by whites be considered white music? Of course not. Music is music, and if it's good, or at least popular, it will be appreciated regardless of a government declaration, and if it's crap it will be ignored regardless of whether or not we have a month in it's honor. Fiddle: you aren't exactly a big fan of bush, why are you now evoking his name in defense of this horrible declaration? I'd say he fucked up in signing this. Do you think without a black music month people would be unaware of rap, jazz, etc?
Lol, we must have a black music history month to teach kids about this thing called "rap" which they've probably never heard of, as it never really caught on. Otherwise they might not appreciate this unique cultural achievement that is so rapidly dying off.
Yeah yeah yeah biatch black muzic monf! Ya'll better axe somebody, you doin too much.
I would start with hip hop, and before that the blues.
It's just a label. And of course rock and roll was inspired by the blues, and some rockers (Jerry Garcia for one) were inspired by jazz. Is there anything wrong with that?
FiddleFaddleOnLSD - I wasn't asking whether or not black music month was good or bad. The question is: what is black music? Celebrating diversity? How about putting prejudice on music? How about obessing over racial difference? What should it matter what colour a musician is? If the music is good, then enjoy it. Demanding to know what skin colour a musician is, is unnecessary to the appreciation of the music being made. It would be like an ill person demanding to know exactly who produced his medication- of what race they were and so on. Such a man would be a fool, as that doesn't matter. If the medication is good then take it. If a piece of music is beautiful than enjoy it. I would personally find it offensive if the music I played was labelled by my race. Anyway, back to the ballot question: what do you think 'black music' is?
Music made by Black people that sucks. Which is 90 percent of it.
