AMERICAN ELITES OVERWHELMINGLY MORE LIBERAL THAN THE PUBLIC ON LANGUAGE?

[+] serious ballot by xxxxxxxx
created Wed Feb 28, 07

"In 1986 a proposed amendment to California's Constitution making English the official language was opposed by all the state's top political figures (except then Senator Pete Wilson), including the governor, attorney general, the other US senator, the state senate President, the speaker of the Assembly, the mayors of San Francisco and San Diego, the city councils of Los Angeles and San Jose, all the major television and radio stations, all the major newspapers except the 'San Francisco Examiner', the California Labour Federation (AFL-CIO), and the California Catholic Bishops Conference. On election day, 73.2% of Californian voters approved the amendment with majorities for it in every county.

In 1988 presidential candidates George H. W. Bush and Michael Dukhais opposed the official language measures on the ballot in Florida, Arizona, and Colorado. So also did the political, social, and economic elites. In Florida the proposed constitutional amendment was opposed by the governor, the attorney general, the secretary of state, the 'Miami Herald', the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce, plus many Hispanic organizations, others of which however, abstained in deference to the overwhelming popularity of the measure. It was approved by 85.5% of the voters and carried every county."

- Why do you believe there seemed to be a trend in which elites, both left and right, seem to be extremely liberal on the issue of language, despite the nationalism of the American public regarding the English language?

American elites are globalised and have lost the extent of nationalism that the American public has
They have been overcome by political correctness

Voted : American elites are globalised and have lost the extent of nationalism that the American public has
Despite popular opinion they still took those stances. It seems they are overwhelmingly liberal on this issue. They tried to lobby against the measures, despite the popularity of them among the masses. The elites seem to have lost their sense of patriotism and nationalism, due to their indulgence in globalisation.

Of course, no self-respecting English-speaking American would want to make a living mowing thier lawns, cleaning their swimming pools, washing their dishes, wiping their fat asses, etc.

Who do you think makes the border patrol try to do their job with both hands tied behind their backs?

Voted : They have been overcome by political correctness
They want the votes. Mexicans are the fastest growing minority group in the country, and one of the largest already. To alienate them means that your party will lose a great many elections.

I loved those debates featuring the right wing commentator Ariana Huffington (slavic transplant married to a billionaire - dabbling in politics)

she would say in her heavily accented broken english how all the immigrantion is bad for the US and how english only policy was the right way to go.

Not that it's a bad thing.

And, herzog, how is it "politically correct" not to want a national language?

Voted : American elites are globalised and have lost the extent of nationalism that the American public has
I think they deal with global issues more than the average American.

Ariana Huffington a right wing commentator? Maybe early on but not now. Ever heard of the website Huffington Post?

I think I must be one of dem liberals. I feel strongly that English should remain our national language.

Ms Huffington used to be extremely right-wing. Remember that show she did with Al Franken -- Pillow Talk or something -- where they were both in bed and would argue politics? It was funny and good.

Then she had a sea change.
