STOLEN ANTIQUITIES AS COLLECTOR'S ITEM: SHOULD IT BE CONFISCATED?

I was recently invited to this guys home. He was very proud of many beautiful things that he acquired in his lifetime, and I saw things of great beauty, many painting and sculptures, mostly by the modern masters.

in the midst of it, I glanced at a strange pillow shaped clay with what appeared to be a cuneiform writings. He explained to me that it was an early Sumerian tablet that was in a collection of an egyptologist who brought it into the country earlier in the last century.

Should individuals own antiquities of another nation, thousands of years old, which might be valuable to the scientific community of the world?

Or is it "finder's keepers" and it's okay to trade, if it's done when it was "legal" to do so.

Maybe if it is or was made against the law, as it probaly should be, the stuff that was legally paid for up to a certain date should remain in the individual's collection. But anything discovered or whatever after that date has to remain the property of that country.

Then again, just like illegal drugs are a huge gigantic black market industry, maybe that would happen with artifacts if it was to be made illegal to own any of them. People would still get their hands on them, and maybe at the cost of too many human lives.

At first, I was going to select the first choice, but I talked myself into the second choice.
