I dealt with similar moral quandry, back when I was working toward having a career as a Navy officer. Granted, the chances of a guy who serves ina nuclear sub ever having to take a life with his own hands are vanishingly small, but I still had to meet the issue in my own mind. I could've done it, but it would require an effort of will that lies beyond most people, IMO.

Kill 100 to stop the genocide of a million... it isn't wrong if there is no other way.

Wrong if the people prevented from being killed are Nazi scum. Otherwise it's ok.

If you let 100 people die so that millions may live, some people will have a fit, but if you save those 100 people and let millions die, they will also have a fit. Going by numbers only, I suppose the greater number of people takes precedence.

I wonder where that leaves policies of "preemptive attacks"?
