"Non sibi sed patriae." I can't remember when I didn't live by it.
Voted : I tend more towards egoism
I don't believe in true altruism. There is always going to be some kind of "you scratch my back, I'll scratch yours" kind of thing. Or a "volunteering for you will look good on my résumé" kind of thing. But I would like to think that through my apparent egoism I do other people some good.

Good man; wish I could say the same. I'm pretty sure I tend more towards egoism/narcissism since I'm pretty self-absorbed and occasionally am confronted with the feeling that I'm somehow "above" others--which is fortunately repulsive. That doesn't mean I'm not generous or committed to humanism though.

I think I'd be more successful in this culture if I were a bit more narcissistic. I was told off by a client the other day for not being more selfish. That was scary.

Believe it or not, I have given this a lot of thought in my life. I am a true egoist. I would like to temper it with more altruism, but I do not know how to do this. I think the act of “giving” embarrasses me because of the psychologically abusive treatment I received as a kid. As a result, I associate altruism with a sense defeat and loss. My boyfriend, who is quite a bit more altruistic than I am, loves me anyway. I am VERY lucky.
