[+] ballot by aya created Sun Mar 04, 07 Mike Scully, one of the creators once said "You can make fun of a person's weight, race, intelligence, and that's all up for grabs, but when you get to religion, it makes people nervous." So when the Simpsons aired an episode featuring a commercial that offended Catholics, they got embroiled in another fight with a Catholic group called the League. The episode featured Marge and Lisa watching a comerical during Superbowl Sunday whereby some women are scantily clad and suggestively pumping gas (I'm sure you know which ep I'm talking about, Simpsons fans). The commercial finished with "That Catholic Church...we've made a few changes." Lisa called it 'weird.' The League demanded that the word Catholic be ommitted, and Fox agreed with Scully that the material wasn't actually offensive to Catholics. However, because Fox had trouble with the Catholics again several months later, Fox suggested putting in a Protestant substitute. Scully refused, saying that would just offend another group of people. At the end, they did remove the word catholic from that commerical when Fox threatened them to do so, or remove all reference from religion. However, in 2001, when Burns made a reference to his assistant Smithers as a "chinamen" an Asian group demanded it's removal, and the creators of the Simpsons acquised, in spite of the fact that the creators maintained that it wasn't racist, but a reference to Burns' antiquated views.
