FBI Underreported Use of USA Patriot Act

Posted: Mar. 9, 2007

WASHINGTON — The FBI improperly and, in some cases, illegally used the USA Patriot Act to secretly obtain personal information about people in the United States, underreporting for three years how often it forced businesses to turn over customer data, a Justice Department audit concluded Friday.

In some cases, FBI agents demanded the data without proper authorization, according to a 126-page audit by Justice Department Inspector General Glenn A. Fine. At other times, the audit found, the FBI improperly obtained telephone records in non-emergency circumstances. (AP)

... but still, it disappoints me. Recently I was reading about J. Edgar Hoover's reign of terror, and I guess one always hopes things will change -- expecially in the U.S.A.

Love the visual.

If a law is in place that gives judicial institutions authority then they will use it. Nice pic.

No. Abuse of authority when spying has gone on long before there was ever any version of the Patriot Act or a Bush in the Whitehouse.
