You can easily buy houses for less than what you can buy a new car.

there are hundreds of houses being literally abandoned and foreclosed, and the state never really participated in the housing boom of the last 10 years.

Houses for less than a price of a car?

Is michigan really THAT bad? Worse than wasting your life on repaying a 30 year mortgage??

Michigan is dead economically. DO NOT COME HERE unless you're independently wealthy. And if you are independently wealthy, there are nicer places than Michigan.

The houses aren't quite that cheap. A small but decent house usually runs about $50-60k.

Then again, I've heard the taxes are pretty disgusting compared to neighboring states. I have been told this is why Toledo (where I currently live) has no sizable suburbs north of the Ohio-Michigan border. In fact, you drive north from Toledo, you're in city one minute, and the next, you're literally in the middle of nowhere...

All things equal, though, I love the Upper Peninsula...Except in the winter, which I'm told is about two months longer than mine...
